The Nightly: June 7th, 2023

Hello Nightly!!!

Tonight, it’s a double feature as we look at Lilo and Stitch and Treasure Planet.

Lilo and Stitch is a very good movie. It’s basically half a drama movie about a broken family, and half a sci-fi family movie. And the two halves surprisingly work well together. Lilo and Nani are very well written characters, and Stitch is great, as well as Jumba and Pleakley. The movie takes place in Hawaii and it captures it very well in the art style, including watercolor backgrounds, the art style is really cool in this film. There’s also some Elvis songs in it since it is in Hawaii and it’s kind of bizarre to hear mainstream popular music like Elvis songs in a Disney movie. Overall, a really good movie.

Treasure Planet on the other hand, is kind of mid. I know this movie is getting a cult following similar to Atlantis, and I can see why, but for me, I could not get into this movie. It’s an interesting idea, with interesting stuff and characters, I like the Emma Thompson character, and Long John Silver. But the story is lacking, and overall, comes off as not only a product of the time (especially in regards to the humor and Jim Hawkins) but a lot of style over substance.

On to the Nightly.
