Two Opinions Can Be True at the Same Time: Reactions to the Bloodline Saga

I decided to write this post after seeing the same discussion appear multiple times in the comments section in recent weeks. It goes something like this:

"The Bloodline Saga is one the greatest stories WWE has ever told."

"No it's not. They have held the titles for way too long and the story has often been boring"

"Yes it is. This is long-term storytelling at its finest."

I find this interaction interesting because I agree with both commenters equally and my sense is a lot of other fans, maybe even a majority, do as well. We seem to be disagreeing when there really isn't a disagreement.

The beginning of this saga with Roman Reigns and his abusive treatment of Jey Uso was amazing, especially considering they were working during the time of empty arenas. The current story with Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens reuniting and (in my opinion) one of the most unpredictable Wrestlemania main events ever between Reigns and Rhodes has also been stellar. The Usos and Paul Heyman have displayed masterful character work throughout. I haven't seen many people dispute these statements.

In between these two parts of the saga we had Finn Balor flopping on the mat like a fish, Bye Bye Ms. American Pie, the whole roster being sacrificed to Brock Lesnar, and Logan Paul getting a world title shot in Saudi Arabia. In my opinion all of these matches were part of the absolute worst period in WWE history. I realize some fans enjoyed this period more than me, but I didn't hear anyone at the time praise it for being a golden age of WWE booking.

When I have seen the back and forth I paraphrased above, I haven't seen the naysayer criticize the initial and recent segments of the Bloodline Saga, and I haven't seen the supporter defend the middle part. The commenters are talking past each other.

I will say, even though I agree with the idea that the middle part of the Bloodline Saga was hot garbage, I don't understand the need to remind fans of it while they are excited for this chapter. That is all pretty far in the past by wrestling standards and doesn't need to be rehashed while getting hyped for this Wrestlemania. On the other hand, there are fans who criticize AEW and point to the Bloodline story as a way to demonstrate WWE's superiority who could show some more humility considering that middle chapter.

Wrestling is an industry comprised of weekly, live television shows. Stories often get messy and there will always be both hits and misses. The Bloodline Saga has had its share of both, but we currently seem to be in a period of consistent hits. I'm going to enjoy this as much as possible while it lasts.
