Rumor Roundup (Dec. 7, 2023): Vince McMahon plans, AJ Styles return, AEW negativity, more!

WWE on YouTube

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

  • Sources told Sports Illustrated that Vince McMahon has no plans to leave WWE/TKO, and “still wields great power in the company.” Vince’s relationship with Ari Emanuel remains good after Emanuel made the call to have Triple H run creative without interference.
  • As for McMahon selling nearly $700 million worth of TKO stock, SI says he needed to be more liquid but it’s not clear what the cash is for.
  • “The plan right now” is for AJ Styles to return on SmackDown this Friday, according to Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer.
  • On WOR, Meltzer also discussed what he said is “a lot of negativity” in and around AEW right now. Even though gross revenue is up, he attributed some of that to poor ticket sales at many recent and upcoming shows. Some of it is also due to there not being enough television time to go around given the roster size.
  • Another factor is the firing of post-production head Kevin Sullivan, especially the optics of former WWE exec Mike Mansury deciding Sullivan was out. Even though Mansury & Sullivan do different jobs, Meltzer said for many AEW originals the move was another case of “WWE guys taking the place of people who were here from the start.”
  • Regarding talent complaining about things like television time on social media, Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp has heard that Bryan Danielson & the AEW disciplinary committee are fining people “based on social media conduct… I know about at least one or two people who have been fined by him.”
  • Fightful also says that AEW’s Jack Perry is no longer under suspension. That news came on the same day multiple sites reported on Perry filing a trademark for “Jungle Boy”.
  • On the subject of trademarks, Bodyslam.net’s Cassidy Haynes reached out to WWE about reports of Jey Uso no longer using Yeet and was told that the company’s lawyers are looking into a potential issue with an indie wrestler’s claim. WWE has currently stopped using the word, but “there may be hope yet for Yeet to stick around”.
  • Los Angeles’ Globe Theatre is closing after all. That per Prestige Wrestling owner William Quintana; his promotion is moving all their shows to the Vermont Hollywood.
