Welcome to the weekly Rumor Look Back, where we look at the rumors from six months ago and see which played out as originally stated. First let’s get to some outstanding rumors.

December 23, 2020

  • Ryback is currently teasing working with AEW in 2020, and there is a belief that will happen.
  • The Big Guy did not show up in Jacksonville. (0/1)

December 28, 2020

  • They also say that Survivor Series in 2020 is likely for Dallas, Texas, and Royal Rumble in 2021 is likely for Seattle, Washington.
  • Rumors couldn’t predict the pandemic. Both of those shows were in the ThunderDome. (0/2)

March 3, 2020

  • This year’s Survivor Series PPV will be in Dallas on Nov. 22, says Wrestlevotes.
  • Same rumor as above, though this time, much closer to the world shutting down. I browsed the comments of this Rumor Roundup but no one was thinking about that possibility just yet. (0/1)

April 7, 2020

  • Tampa Bay will be in the running to host WrestleMania 38 in 2022, per WrestleVotes.
  • They actually got 37 as the first WWE show back with fans. Next year they’ll be in Dallas, a fine consolation prize for losing that Survivor Series from last year. I looked at the comments of this Roundup as well, which is predictably all pandemic related. (0/1)

OK, now onto this week’s rumors.

February 1, 2021

  • While she obviously wasn’t at Royal Rumble, Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio that Becky Lynch is “on her way back” to WWE.
  • No return just yet.
  • It’s possible Ronda Rousey will be back for WrestleMania 37, says Meltzer, but it does make more sense for her to be in Dallas for next year’s WrestleMania or Los Angeles the year after because this year it’ll still be a scaled down event.”
  • She wasn’t at 37, which makes sense because she’s pregnant. It’s possible to see her in the next couple years though.
  • Vince McMahon has been adamant that Goldberg use the jackhammer in his matches even when Goldberg and his opponent haven’t been “gung ho” to do the move, according to Fightful Select.
  • It’s not a vote of confidence when talent don’t want to take a legend’s iconic finish. We’ll see if Lashley takes one.
  • PW Insider reports Carlito is expected to stick around for tonight’s Raw, and may get a try out as a producer.
  • He had a match during Raw. I don’t think he stuck around as a producer though. (1/1)
  • Users won’t be able to pause or rewind live WWE streams on Peacock, per Meltzer. The features may be added eventually, but won’t be there when the Network migrates over.
  • I think you can pause now but I’m not sure. I know early on you couldn’t. Peacock kind of sucks, man. (1/1)

February 2, 2021

  • Edge vs. Roman Reigns is the planned main event of WrestleMania 37, reports Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer.
  • It was the second night main, but Daniel Bryan was part of it, changing the match. (0/1)
  • “The Bianca Belair match isn’t 100 percent right now,” according to the Observer.
  • Why wouldn’t it be? She won the Rumble so she would normally get the match. The match did happen.
  • Meltzer also wrote that Christian’s return is “not a one-time-and gone thing,” but it’s not clear how much he’ll be wrestling.
  • I’m not sure if this rumor means it’s not one and done in WWE (which would be wrong) or not one and done overall (which would be correct).
  • “The vibe” backstage at Royal Rumble was “the most upbeat locker room he’s seen in a long while”, said a WrestleVotes source. This is usual this time of year, but amplified by the prospect of the return of fans at WrestleMania.
  • It must have been rough wrestling front of no one for so long.
  • Jey Uso wasn’t medically cleared for the Rumble, according to the Observer. No medical reason was reported, and his expected return is likewise unknown.
  • He wasn’t gone for long.

February 3, 2021

  • According to the Observer, Christian was secretly cleared last week.
  • Of course he was. They wouldn’t have let him work the match otherwise.
  • Ringside News notes that Vince McMahon wasn’t at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view and Triple H was in charge of the show. It’s unclear why McMahon was gone.
  • That’s odd that the boss wasn’t at one of the biggest shows of the year.
  • Rhea Ripley is considered a member of the main roster now, per the Observer, but it may still be undecided if she’ll be on Raw or SmackDown.
  • She ended up on Raw.
  • Wrestling Inc says Carlito is on a three-week trial run with WWE, something MVP pushed hard for and Triple H approved. There’s apparently a belief he will sign and the company has been impressed with him.
  • He is not signed with them. (0/1)
  • PW Insider notes Bad Bunny is planned to make more appearances with WWE, and could even be wrestling a match at WrestleMania 37.
  • He looked really good in that WrestleMania match. (2/2)

February 4, 2021

  • On The Board at F4WOnline, Dave Meltzer said Lars Sullivan no showed some tapings prior to his release.
  • He had a history of anxiety. I wonder if that played into it.
  • A WWE source told Fightful Select that they saw Sullivan’s weird shirtless interview with Michael Cole as “sabotage, but if it was a test, he passed it.”
  • They did some weird shit with him towards the end of his WWE career.
  • Chelsea Green’s latest injury has healed and she’s in the process of getting cleared by WWE for a return, per Fightful.
  • She never made it back to TV. She’s since been released.
  • Further evidence in support of their report the global music superstar is planning to work WrestleMania 37, PW Insider says Bad Bunny has been training at the WWE Performance Center.
  • That’s accurate. (1/1)
  • In an interview with Jim Varsallone of the Miami Herald, Booker T confirmed reports his Reality of Wrestling trainee AQA (Angela Quentina Arnold) has signed with WWE and will be reporting to the PC soon.
  • Booker’s students have a good in for WWE given his relationship with the company.

February 5, 2021

  • PW Insider noted that there is some fear within WWE of roster cuts coming in the aftermath of WWE’s earnings report. It’s unknown if the releases of Lars Sullivan and Steve Cutler are the beginning of a new batch of cuts.
  • Feels like that’s all they’ve been doing. They just released another bunch of talent two nights ago. So the fear that some wrestlers were supposedly fearing were not misguided. And that fear is likely more pronounced at this point.
  • On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer indicated that NXT wrestlers Karrion Kross and Austin Theory are “being groomed for the main roster.”
  • Kross is on the main while Theory is not yet there. The way Kross has been booked, he may prefer to be with Theory still. Though he doesn’t make it sound that way.
  • He also said that Shaquille O’Neal isn’t wrestling at AEW Revolution on Mar. 7 because that date conflicts with the NBA All-Star game. That’s why Shaq will instead be wrestling on the Mar. 3 episode of AEW Dynamite.
  • That Shaq match was more fun than it had any right being.
  • Per Meltzer, Angel Garza was supposed to be in the Royal Rumble match but was pulled from it. Meanwhile, Fightful states that Toni Storm was the replacement for Mia Yim in the Royal Rumble, and that Kacy Catanzaro was on standby just in case she was needed.
  • The fact they haven’t done more with someone as charismatic and talented as Garza is telling.
  • According to Ringside News, Murphy and Bo Dallas have been showing up to television, but “they haven’t been given anything to do.”
  • They’ve both been released.

February 6, 2021

  • The Observer notes that there is no set idea right now on who will be winning the planned Edge vs. Roman Reigns match at WrestleMania 37.
  • It’s surprising that the plan wasn’t Reigns the entire time.
  • Speaking of, they also say Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar is on the table for a future WrestleMania match with the Paul Heyman connection.
  • I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
  • WrestleVotes says there have been talks of having Finn Bálor and the NXT championship on the card at WrestleMania 37.
  • That did not happen. (0/1)
  • Edge apparently has been pushing for a match with Daniel Bryan this year.
  • They never actually had a one on one match, which is a damn shame.
  • The Wrestling Observer Newsletter says that there were talks with both ESPN and Vice on a US television deal for New Japan Pro Wrestling before a deal was reached with Roku Channel.
  • Seems like that’s the least exciting of all the options
