AAA Triplemania XXIX preview & predictions: Will Kenny Omega lose another title against Andrade?

Lucha libre fans, rejoice. AAA’s biggest show of the year is here. Triplemania XXIX takes place tonight (Aug. 14, 2021). Let’s break down the card with a preview and predictions for the mask versus hair main event between Psycho Clown and Rey Escorpion, Kenny Omega putting the AAA Megacampeonato on the line in a dream match against Andrade, Deonna Purrazzo venturing to Mexico in title versus title, the Lucha Bros ready to set the ring on fire with their flashy skills, and much more.

Mask vs. Hair: Psycho Clown vs. Rey Escorpion

AAA has had a strong run of delivering the goods in Triplemania main events. They are action-packed, violent, and engaging. Tonight’s headline match should be no different. Psycho Clown and Rey Escorpion truly have a blood feud. Things escalated quickly when Escorpion invaded Psycho’s home and considered stabbing him with a knife in front of his children.

That lead to a series of ambush beatdowns from both men in public scenarios. Psycho almost drowned in a pool for crying out loud.

Tonight is the night to settle the score once and for all.

Prediction: Psycho Clown shaves Rey Escorpion bald. This is a pick based on star power. Psycho is the biggest draw in AAA. Even though Escorpion is a great rudo, he isn’t on the level to carry the promotion into the future with a win of this magnitude.

AAA Megacampeonato: Kenny Omega (c) vs. Andrade

Dream match alert. Kenny Omega has been the Megacampeon for 663 days. He has defeated Fenix, Dragon Lee, and Laredo Kid. Now comes his biggest AAA challenge to date. Andrade is ready to go from superstar to megastar after parting ways with WWE. Step one is winning AAA’s top prize. To add even more intrigue, Omega lost the Impact World Championship to Christian Cage last night on AEW Rampage. This could be the beginning of Omega dropping his belt collection. A second title loss in two nights would be devastating to the champ’s ego.

Prediction: Andrade becomes new Megacampeon. Omega carried the ball as an international draw, but the time is here for the title to return to the hands of a Mexican luchador. A win also establishes Andrade back at the top of the lucha libre scene, so he can go after the most popular luchador in AAA, Psycho Clown.

Lucha de Empresas: Team AAA vs. La Empresa

La Empresa is an invading faction led by Puma King, Sam Adonis, & DMT Azul (aka Diamante Azul from CMLL). It is the typical AAA storyline that has been running for decades. Bad guys come in with a desire to cause chaos. AAA put together a trio to take it to the outsiders. Pagano, Murder Clown, & Chessman have been handed the assignment. The intrigue is whether or not Pagano and Chessman can work together. They are bitter rivals who headlined last year’s Triplemania in hair versus hair.

Prediction: La Empresa wins. Chessman is a tough one to trust, and I think his rudo side gets the better of him by eventually attacking Pagano. Plus, there is the possibility of La Empresa bringing in more luchadores to strengthen their numbers.

AAA Tag Team Championship: Fenix & Pentagon (c) vs. Hijo del Vikingo & Laredo Kid vs. Taurus & surprise luchador

Fenix and Pentagon return to AAA to defend the tag titles. Hijo del Vikingo and Laredo Kid have history as high-flying trios champs together. If you are not too familiar with Vikingo and Laredo, keep your eyes peeled for them. Both luchadores would be on the breakout star level if they ever sign with a televised US promotion. Taurus is getting the mystery partner treatment. AAA teased it should be a noteworthy name who has competed in several promotions. I remember ROH being specifically mentioned. It would be interesting if Konnan used his LAX connection to score Homicide.

Prediction: Lucha Bros retain. Vikingo is the golden boy on the up swing. He has been accumulating accolades for awhile. However, I think Fenix and Pentagon are still the hottest act in the match.

Title vs. Title: Faby Apache vs. Deonna Purrazzo

Deonna Purrazzo wants to test her skills against the best Mexico has to offer, so she turned to AAA and Faby Apache. In order to sweeten the pie, a title versus title challenge was made. Both the Impact Knockouts Championship and the Reina de Reinas Championship will be on the line.

Prediction: Deonna Purrazzo becomes a double champ. She has too much on her plate, such as a title defense at NWA Empowerrr, to be losing the Knockouts Championship at this point in time. Purrazzo’s story right now is all about building her legacy. Winning the AAA Reina de Reinas title would add another notch of success to her résumé.

Copa Bardahl: Drago, Mr. Iguana, Mamba, plus 9 surprise luchadores

The Copa Triplemania was branded for the Bardahl sponsorship. This match is likely to be Royal Rumble style. With nine surprise luchadores, it’s anybody’s game to win.

Prediction: Surprise luchador #6. It’s hard to pick a winner without knowing who’s competing. I am confident in saying Drago, Mr. Iguana, and Mamba won’t be victorious. I think the winner will be someone important. I’ll take a shot in the dark and pick Dr. Wagner Jr.

Marvel Lucha Libre: Team Leyenda Americana vs. Team Terror Purpura

AAA and Marvel formed a marketing partnership to create luchador characters inspired by comic books. Last year’s list of talent under the masks included Daga as Leyenda America (Captain America), Lio Rush as Aracno (Spider-Man), Brian Cage as Terror Purpura (Thanos), and Taurus as Venenoide (Venom). Most of those names seem unlikely this year, but you never know. AAA wants experienced talent to make sure the characters perform well and the experiment succeeds.

Prediction: Team Leyenda Americana. A win for the good guys.

Triplemania XXIX kicks off at 9 pm ET. Viewing options are limited to Mexico.

Due to a trademark lawsuit with Lucha Underground financial backers, worldwide access is limited for the time being. Luchablog (here) breaks it down in greater detail. Even though Triplemania isn’t available worldwide, that has never stopped the internet, and AAA shows have been known to show up on places like Twitch.
