Welcome to the weekly Rumor Look Back, where we look at the rumors from six months ago and see which played out as originally stated. Let’s get right to it.

December 14, 2020

  • According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a big part of Sting coming to AEW was the fact that Tony Khan agreed that Sting can “leave on his own terms.”
  • I’m guessing that this means he can finish off his career the way he wants to instead of going out by injury. Which is understandable. No one wants that taken away from them.
  • Per the Observer, Eva Marie is training right now for her comeback. Still no word on when that will be, however.
  • Her debut was last Monday. (1/1)
  • PW Insider notes that Sami Callihan is expected to remain with Impact Wrestling in 2021. His deal comes up at the end of the year.
  • He has a big match for the Impact title against Kenny Omega at Slammiversary. (1/1)
  • They also say it’s expected Ethan Page will leave when his deal is up at the same time.
  • Page is in AEW now. (1/1)
  • Multiple sites are saying the tease on Impact could very well be leading to a Kenny Omega-Rich Swann program in 2021.
  • That was the program that led to Kenny winning the Impact title. (1/1)

  • Vince McMahon likes Riddle and thinks he’s “very funny in his own weird way,” according to Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer. Vince may not see him as a main eventer, but does see him as deserving regular TV time.
  • He and Randy are easily the best thing on Raw every week. (1/1)
  • Somewhat conflicting reports on Keith Lee continue. On Observer Radio, Meltzer said Vince thinks Lee is “not ready” for a main event spot just yet. The additional training Lee and others are getting isn’t viewed internally as a demotion, but as making sure they’re ready for a prime spot down the line.
  • Lee has been MIA for months now.
  • On the other hand, Ringside News’ sources say Vince “doesn’t see it in” Lee. They say the backstage reaction might be different if there were crowds, but right now “Vince can only go by what he feels, or what Kevin Dunn says on headsets.”
  • I’m very curious to learn what the situation with Keith Lee is.
  • Ringside also claims Lars Sullivan hasn’t been at SmackDown since his sit-down interview with Michael Cole on Nov. 6.
  • He was eventually released.
  • Kevin Owens told Inside The Ropes’ Kenny McIntosh that WWE considered Shane & Vince McMahon as WrestleMania 34 opponents for him & Sami Zayn. Vince opted to focus on running the show, and Daniel Bryan’s return made him a logical choice as Shane’s partner.
  • The headbutt from Owens would have been the set up. But Vince was in no position to be wrestling even five years ago.

December 16, 2020

  • Lana is expected to be out for several weeks, according to PW Insider, and maybe up to a full month.
  • She was back at the Royal Rumble. (1/1)
  • Insider also notes that Keith Lee was originally scheduled to wrestle The Miz in a singles match on Raw this week before it was changed late to a handicap match. He was booked to lose that match as well.
  • The Lee thing is so very weird to me. Not that he wasn’t pushed but that he disappeared completely. Hopefully it’s not health related. That’d obviously be the worst possibility. It would be cruddy if Vince just gave up on him, but not as bad as if it were health or injury related.
  • Finally, they say management was unhappy about numerous segments running long during Raw this week.
  • That’s understandable. Gotta be tight for TV.
  • Per WrestleVotes, a group of writers in WWE were asked to make a list of underutilized talent who might do well if given the chance and names including the likes of Cesaro, Angel Garza, Chad Gable, Carmella, and Peyton Royce.
  • Royce has since been released.
  • They also note that, not surprisingly, the record low Raw viewership numbers aren’t sitting well within WWE and reactionary decisions could be coming.
  • I don’t recall any on air reactionary decisions. No hot shot title changes. They did a Legends Night so maybe you can count that? This is rather vague so I’m going to leave it ungraded.

December 17, 2020

  • Despite Ric Flair’s comments on ESPN, PW Insider reports their sources say nothing’s changed over the last several years and a physical WWE Hall of Fame is still in the discussion phase.
  • We’ll see if that every happens.
  • According to WrestlingNews.co, some wrestlers in AEW are upset with Jim Ross criticizing matches on his podcast, with one telling the site they’ll be less likely to listen to “the guy who is supposed to help put us over is going out there and publicly burying us.”
  • I can see why that’d rub people the wrong way. It hasn’t stopped either, given the Orton/Omega comments he made recently.
  • NXT’s new India brand will initially tape in Orlando with hopes of premiering on the country’s Republic Day holiday (Jan. 26), per Sportskeeda. Jinder Mahal, the Singhs, and other roster members of South Asian descent are expected to take part in its opening tournament.
  • It looks like that’s right. Here are the results of that show. (1/1)
  • On a PW Torch podcast, Jonny Fairplay said that Robert Stone told him he planned to manage Melina in NXT, and now that that’s fallen through “he has no idea what he’s going to do.”
  • He’s not really doing anything. Managing Aliyah & Jessi Kamea from the sidelines.
  • PW Insider notes that RUSH’s ROH contract is up at the end of the year, and his brother Dragon Lee has also drawn a lot of interest from other promotions.
  • They re-signed with ROH.

December 18, 2020

  • On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer indicated that one goal AEW has with Sting is to elevate Darby Allin into a bigger star.
  • I think it helped accomplish that.
  • PW Insider says that Cameron Grimes underwent surgery last week for his injury. Meltzer confirmed the 4 to 6 week timetable for his return is accurate.
  • It was about 2 months. (0/1)
  • According to Fightful, Dakota Kai is not injured. She is absent from NXT right now because WWE is trying to straighten out a visa issue.
  • Whatever it was, it didn’t keep her out for long.
  • Jonny Fairplay clarified that his comments about Robert Stone and Melina’s return to WWE were misunderstood. Stone never told him that he planned to manage Melina in NXT, it’s something that Fairplay heard elsewhere.
  • I guess he was worried he was throwing Robbie E under the bus.
  • Farrah Hasnain breaks down a story from Asahi Digital about the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s investigation into Hana Kimura’s suicide. Over 1200 deleted posts of harassment, death threats, etc., were discovered during the cyberbullying investigation, and it looks like there are plans to file charges against a man in his 20’s.
  • This was just a terrible terrible thing.

December 19, 2020

  • talkSPORT has a source telling them that USA Network is “furious” over low viewership for Monday Night Raw and they “want more adult content. Not sexy adult, but dark and violent adult.”
  • I don’t know if we ever got that. I mean there’s the doll stuff.
  • Wrestling Inc says Triple H has assembled a team to oversee a new NXT show, likely for the Network, that was targeted for early 2021 but has since been pushed back. Dave Meltzer, meanwhile, has said talks of a new NXT show have been ongoing for a while and nothing is official at this point.
  • Is this related to NXT Evolve?
  • Per the Observer, Bobby Lashley vs. Riddle for the U.S. title is on the books for Royal Rumble next month.
  • That was not a Royal Rumble match. (0/1)
  • PW Insider notes that the belief is Kenny Omega won’t wrestle on Impact before Hard to Kill next month.
  • That’s accurate. (1/1)
  • They also say Madison Rayne is leaving Impact Wrestling for a job outside of pro wrestling.
  • She’s not working in the business that I’m aware of. (1/1)

This week: 9/11 - 82%

Overall: 3,781/6,724 - 56.2%

Have a great week, everyone!
