CMLL Copa Dinastias 2021 results: Blue Panther Jr. & Black Panther are unexpected winners

If tag team tournaments are your jam, then CMLL’s Copa Dinastias is for you. The event featured teams of family relation doing battle over one night. Let’s break down the results with highlights.

The Copa Dinastias 2021 had ten tag teams. Yes, ten is a weird number for a tournament, so the rules had to get a little creative. A battle royal determined the first round matchups. The first round had five matches. All of the losers competed in another battle royal with the final two working to a pinfall or submission. The winner advanced to the quarterfinals. For the semifinals, three winners advanced. The fourth spot was determined by a three-way between quarterfinal losers. The final came down to the two semifinal winners. The explanation is a little confusing, so here is a handy-dandy chart.

The participants included Ultimo Guerrero & Gran Guerrero, Sanson & Forastero, Felino & Felino Jr., Gemelo Diablo I & Gemelo Diablo II, Rey Cometa & Espiritu Negro, Volador Jr. & Flyer, Blue Panther Jr. & Black Panther, Atlantis & Atlantis Jr., Cachorro Lagunero & Blue Panther, and Panterita del Ring & Panterita del Ring Jr.

Jump right in and enjoy the full tournament highlights. My favorite spots were Cachorro Lagunero leaping off the stage for a flying crossbody and Blue Panther Jr. with a double single-leg crab submission.

Atlantis and Ultimo Guerrero were the survivors of the opening battle royal. The first round results were:

  • Blue Panther Jr. & Black Panther defeated Felino & Felino Jr.
  • Gemelo Diablo I & Gemelo Diablo II defeated Cachorro Lagunero & Blue Panther
  • Sanson & Forastero defeated Volador Jr. & Flyer
  • Rey Cometa & Espiritu Negro defeated Panterita del Ring & Panterita del Ring Jr.
  • Atlantis & Atlantis Jr. defeated Ultimo Guerrero & Gran Guerrero

Volador pinned Gran Guerrero via Mexican Destroyer to win the second chance battle royal. Second round results were:

  • Blue Panther Jr. & Black Panther defeated Gemelo Diablo I & Gemelo Diablo II
  • Sanson & Forastero defeated Rey Cometa & Espiritu Negro
  • Volador Jr. & Flyer defeated Atlantis & Atlantis Jr.

One of the Gemelos Diablos emerged victorious in the final chance three-way. I can’t tell which Gemelo is which yet. He pinned Atlantis Jr. on a sitdown slam.

In the semifinals, Blue Panther Jr. & Black Panther defeated Sanson & Forastero when Sanson contemptuously yanked off the mask of Blue Panther resulting in disqualification. I guess winning the Copa Dinastias wasn’t that important to Sanson. It is also a way to protect trios champs Sanson and Forastero (with Cuatrero) from being pinned.

For the other semifinal battle, Volador Jr. & Flyer dispatched Gemelo Diablo I & Gemelo Diablo II. The devil twins ambushed Volador and Flyer from behind prior to the match, but the evil men could not sustain momentum. Flyer pinned a twin on a Spanish Fly, while Volador pinned the other twin on a Mexican Destroyer.

The Copa Dinastias finale came down to Blue Panther Jr. & Black Panther versus Volador Jr. & Flyer. Flyer pinned Black Panther via Spanish Fly. Meanwhile, Volador was shockingly submitted by Blue Panther. Volador picked his opponent up after hitting a superkick only to be swiftly trapped into an armbar. The duel came down to Blue Panther and Flyer. Blue Panther earned the win via standing leglock.

In undercard action, Dragon Rojo Jr., Hechicero, & Barbaro Cavernario defeated Fugaz, Stuka Jr., & Titan. The deciding fall went to Hechicero’s squad when he slickly countered Stuka’s handspring moonsault to wrap him into a pretzel. The highlight clip has a variety of nifty maneuvers.

The opener saw Virus defeat Guerrero Maya Jr. in a lightning match. A single-leg crab variation was the winning hold.

CMLL’s next PPV adventure will be June 25.
