AAA Rey de Reyes full card: Taya & Daga vacate championships, Andrade surprise?, more!

New, 2 comments

AAA is bringing the first of their ‘big five’ events with Rey de Reyes tonight (May 1). The coronavirus pandemic caused a cancellation of last year’s show, but AAA is back roaring strong for 2021. Rey de Reyes will feature mystery participants, two championship bouts, and a tournament where the winner is rewarded with a badass sword.

The full Rey de Reyes card was announced as follows:

  • No DQ: Psycho Clown & Pagano vs. Chessman & a surprise luchador
  • Rey de Reyes: Laredo Kid, Texano Jr., Murder Clown, Aerostar, Drago, Abismo Negro Jr., Hijo del Vikingo, & Myzteziz
  • Reina de Reinas Championship: Faby Apache, Lady Shani, Lady Flammer, Chik Tormenta, Maravilla, & a surprise luchadora
  • Latin American Championship: Octagon Jr vs. Taurus vs. a surprise luchador
  • Dinastia vs. Toxin vs. Aramis vs. Latigo vs. Arez

The hot topic is the mystery man in the main event. There is one particular free-agent luchador that springs to mind. I’m talking about the recently released former WWE superstar Andrade. His appearance would certainly make headlines, and he would be a worthy rival for Psycho Clown to main event Triplemania later in the year.

Not one to be coy, Andrade played into the excitement by posting a photo of himself on a flight with the caption, “El Rey is on his way! I can go wherever I want.”

The trip could just have been for his Federación Wrestling announcement. But while you’re home, El Idoló...

The format for the Rey de Reyes and Reina de Reinas matches are unclear. My guess is that the Reina de Reinas contest will likely be a six-way. The Rey de Reyes could be a Royal Rumble, a straight singles tournament, or perhaps two four-ways resulting in a winners finale. One thing is certain though. The winner of Rey de Reyes will receive a sword as their prize. Aerostar was the last victor.

AAA aficionados may have noticed that Taya Valkyrie and Daga are not listed on the card. Taya is the reigning Reina de Reinas champion. Her third reign came to an end when she signed with WWE to debut in NXT as Franky Monet. She likely would have returned to drop the belt, but with that pesky pandemic, we’ll never know.

As for Daga, he is the reigning Latin American champion.

Rumors are abound that Daga is AEW bound. In regard to this event, he declared that he would vacate the strap. Daga is disappointed and angry for not being able to defend his title and that nobody has stepped up to challenge.

In other championship news unrelated to Rey de Reyes, the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship was vacated by Lady Maravilla and Villano III Jr. when Villano exited the company. Perhaps that is a sign that Maravilla will win gold in the women’s division.

Rey de Reyes airs at 8:00 pm ET (7:00 pm Mexico City) on the Space cable channel in Mexico. Unlike years past, the show will not stream live on Twitch or any other free media platforms for international viewing. That’s a major bummer. Rey de Reyes will likely be uploaded to AAA’s YouTube channel one month from now, more or less.

What do you think of the Rey de Reyes card? Who will win gold? Who are your guesses for the surprise luchadores?
