Rumor Look Back: Oct. 18 - 24, 2020

New, 7 comments

Welcome to the weekly Rumor Look Back, where we look at the rumors from six months ago and see which played out as originally stated. Let’s get right to it.

October 19, 2020

  • claims Vince McMahon wants Becky Lynch back and wrestling at WrestleMania 37 next year. There was word going around that she was backstage at SmackDown this past week.
  • Becky teased it, but it did not happen. So Vince did not get what he wanted if he wanted it.
  • The expectation is Big E will get a big singles push on SmackDown right away after Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston were sent to Raw.
  • I would say in general, he got that push. (1/1)
  • Per the Observer, WWE believes everything they did with Nia Jax putting her through the table and her winning the battle royal has made Lana a “super babyface.”
  • We’ll never know without the live crowd if they pulled it off. I think it made her sympathetic enough, at least to the point some people wanted to see her get some revenge. Super babyface though? I dunno about that.
  • Dave Meltzer mentioned on Wrestling Observer Radio that Ben Carter’s decision to sign with WWE was driven largely by the pandemic affecting independent shows well into 2021.
  • That’s fair. WWE has multiple shows he could be working (in his case NXT UK). In AEW, it would just be Dynamite or more likely, Dark.
  • Lucha Libre Online notes Rush and Dragon Lee have contracts coming up soon. In Rush’s case, he seems to want it known he’s available come early next year.
  • Rush is the current ROH champion. Dragon Lee also re-signed.

  • A source told Inside The Ropes, “‘Vince McMahon couldn’t care less what anyone thinks about him using Goldberg’ and the head honcho still believes there is value in the Goldberg name in WWE.” Goldberg’s appearance in ThunderDome last Friday was supposed to help with ratings (it didn’t) and set up his return for Royal Rumble/WrestleMania season.
  • Vince is gonna do whatever he wants.
  • In last week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote that WWE’s plan for Big E’s singles push is to make him more serious.”
  • I’m going to say no to this. It’s rather subjective, and they’ve given him reason to be serious and when those occur, he does that well. But he’s still a goofball. (0/1)
  • WWE’s attempt to file trademarks on several performer’s names hit a snag, according to Wrestling Inc. In rejecting the filings, the US Patent & Trademark Office is requiring them to provide written consent from the individuals whose names they’re trying to trademark, such as Mia Yim, Drew Gulak, Tony Nese & Pete Dunne.
  • I know Mia and WWE had some issues with this. Not sure if the others signed something.
  • Yim has since filed a trademark for her own name, so she obviously isn’t giving her consent to WWE.
  • I wonder if this has any bearing on her lackluster booking.
  • A trademark filing for “Dominik” may be a sign WWE is planning to turn Rey Mysterio’s son into their latest one-named Superstar.
  • He’s still Dominik Mysterio. I don’t know why they wouldn’t milk the Mysterio name as much as they could. Hell, they added “Flair” to Charlotte’s last name after she came to the main roster. (0/1)

  • WrestleVotes is saying Survivor Series this year will be built around Undertaker and it being 30 years after his debut. He is scheduled to appear on the show but not wrestle.
  • He gave a farewell speech to a piped in crowd who thanked him. I understand why they did that but he needs to give a farewell in front of a live crowd when that’s possible. (1/1)
  • According to PW Insider, despite some wondering if the show ended in a way it wasn’t supposed to, the finish to Raw this week went exactly as planned.
  • Looks like that episode ended teasing a showdown between Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre but the show went off the air prior to the fight really starting.
  • They also say FS1’s decision to bring back WWE Backstage was made really late and original plans called for an hour long episode of Talking Smack after SmackDown.
  • I think we’ve probably seen the end of Backstage. They didn’t even do something for WrestleMania.
  • Per Wrestling Inc, Daga asked for his release from Impact Wrestling “some time ago” and finally had it granted.
  • He’s apparently a free agent now.
  • Jon Alba noted MLW tested almost 80 folks during recent TV tapings and all came back negative for COVID-19. They have “strong safety measures” in place.
  • Always great to hear.

  • A new Fightful Select report on Paul Heyman’s time as Raw Executive Director says he designed the post-2019 Draft roster with an emphasis on more polished, underutilized workers. He even passed on established names like Braun Strowman for that reason.
  • That’s what Heyman likes to do. He did something similar with the SmackDown Six back in the day with guys like Edge, Eddie Guerrero, and Mysterio.
  • Some sources told the site Triple H could have had the Raw job if he’d wanted it. Stephanie McMahon didn’t want it either; she was happy with her Chief Brand Officer position.
  • Triple H is probably happy with the autonomy he has in NXT.
  • On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said AJ Styles’ bodyguard Jordan Omogbehin is in that role because his ring work hasn’t been impressive.
  • Despite a WrestleMania win, he still hasn’t done much.
  • Mance Warner asked to be let out of his MLW contract according to, but the company denied his request.
  • It doesn’t look like there’s an official word about him being released from his contract. He hasn’t been on MLW in a while though.
  • Earlier this month, bodyslam’s Cassidy Haynes reported AEW & Warner were interested in working together.
  • They have not worked together.

October 23, 2020

  • Sources told Inside the Ropes that Elias is going to be a staple on Raw and one of its top stars.
  • I would hardly call Elias a top star. (0/1)
  • PW Insider noted that AEW received the approval from the Frank Sinatra Estate to use the song Me and My Shadow for Le Dinner Debonair.
  • That segment got some recognition.
  • Rey Fenix hurt his neck during his match on Dynamite this week, and Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer said that he was sore afterwards. Next week’s tournament match against Kenny Omega was scheduled to be taped yesterday (Oct. 22), so the status of that match is not clear.
  • They switched it to Omega vs. Pentagon because Fenix couldn’t go.
  • Kris Statlander mentioned to Wrestling Inc that she will be out of the ring for around eight more months due to her ACL injury, which means she won’t be wrestling on Dynamite prior to June 2021.
  • She’s already wrestling again. So she ended up progressing better than anticipated. (0/1)
  • Arn Anderson suggested on his podcast that the main reason WWE used to give David Otunga television time is because Vince McMahon was hoping to get Jennifer Hudson to sing the national anthem at WrestleMania.
  • Otunga had a decent career in WWE so if that’s the case, Vince was hoping for awhile.

  • According to the Observer, the reason WWE didn’t advertise anything for SmackDown until late was because they were rewriting the show just the day before.
  • A very common rumor, one that never changes. Seriously, this rumor is around all the time. Vince tearing up scripts and stories of the show being written after it started are commonplace. This one say the day before is actually pretty good for them.
  • They also say the Otis trial is the reason for all the chaos and it was the top concern for the show. Triple H was also apparently brought in to help with it the show.
  • This was when Otis was on the way to losing his Money in the Bank briefcase.
  • WWE is expected to add another couple of matches to the Hell in a Cell card.
  • Lashley vs. SLAPJACK (you know, the greatest match of all time) and a preshow match with Drew Gulak and R-Truth were added. (1/1)
  • The Wrestling Observer Newsletter notes Rey Mysterio should be back to wrestling soon with his triceps nearly healed completely.
  • He was back wrestling within a couple weeks. (1/1)
  • Ring of Honor is doing another set of TV tapings in December, possibly outside of Baltimore, per the WON.
  • It doesn’t look like ROH has left Baltimore. (0/1)

This week: 4/9 - 44%

Overall: 3,721/6,618 - 56.2%

Have a great week, everyone. Stay safe out there.
