ROH’s rebooted women’s division heads to Wednesdays

At their 19th Anniversary PPV last month, Ring of Honor unveiled plans to restart their dormant women’s division with a tournament to crown a new champion. That won’t start until sometime this summer. But yesterday (April 20), they told us they’ll start having women’s matches sooner than that.

The breakdown of ROH’s relationship with the last Women of Honor champion Kelly Klein, and the coronavirus pandemic, made it so the company hasn’t had a women’s match since 2019. That will change next week, as “Women’s Division Wednesday” comes to their YouTube channel.

In the announcement on their website, the company offered some details:

Beginning April 28, ROH will present Women’s Division Wednesday on ROH’s YouTube channel. There will be a new women’s match every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Eastern featuring newcomers as well as ROH veterans.

No participants for the championship tournament have been announced, so all of the competitors in Women’s Division Wednesday matches will be out to prove that they deserve to be part of the field.

Unlike when AEW put their last two women’s tournament on YouTube, there shouldn’t be any backlash here. Some of that is because ROH’s presentation of women’s wrestling has been so bad, there’s nowhere to go but up.

More than that, however, fans who might not otherwise seek out ROH TV might be willing to watch one match online. And if that match hooks them...

We’ll see how this approach works for Ring of Honor starting next Wednesday.
