MLW Roundup: Terry Funk vs. Abdullah The Butcher, Dario Cueto sighting?, more!

New, 3 comments

Let’s catch up on the latest news in MLW.

MLW’s weekly broadcast of Fusion is taking a week off. In its place will be a flashback episode of MLW Underground from the days of 2003-04. The feature bout will be Terry Funk against Abdullah The Butcher. Abdullah is acting as Steve Corino’s bounty hunter in the feud between Funk and the Extreme Horsemen. This match was rated too violent for television.

In other action on MLW Underground, Los Maximos wrestle Jimmy Yang & Tony Mamaluke and Josh Daniels competes against Rich Criado. Also advertised are appearances from James Mitchell, Mikey Whipwreck, CW Anderson, and Simon Diamond.

The most intriguing tidbit I stumbled across this week was a photo from the Azteca Underground website. Azteca Underground purchased Promociones Dorado, and MLW has been using heavy teases to imply a Lucha Underground connection. They even utilized the same backstory for Mil Muertes under the control of Salina de la Renta.

Under ‘The Proprietor’ section, the following image was posted.

Could that be Dario Cueto? The person in question is hard for me to make out. I assume it isn’t Rich Bocchini in an elaborate plot of payback for Salina pushing him into a pool.

The Filthy Island fighting festival is in the history books. The final moments saw Tom Lawlor being tossed into a windshield. Lawlor was taken to the hospital, then he fled the scene amid accusations of stiffing staff on pay. Lawlor made the right move to escape under the cloak of darkness, because an angry mob formed to get their money. Lawlor’s whereabouts are currently unknown, but he might be in disguise as a hot boy.

Celebrate the glory of Filthy Island with a t-shirt. I’m sure Team Filthy could use the money.

After Low Ki vanquished his foe, King Mo, the Lone Wolf of Brooklyn has his eyes set on gold. That may come in the form of challenging for an MLW championship or perhaps in payment from Azteca Underground.

Talks are in the works for a rematch between Lio Rush and Laredo Kid. It will be another interpromotional battle and may take place with AAA this time. AAA is currently touring Mexico in exotic locales.

Leo Brien signed a long-term contract with MLW. He’s been primarily used in the Dirty Blondes tag team with Michael Patrick as part of Colonel Parker’s Stud Stable.

MLW’s next special event will be Never Say Never on March 31. Championship bouts and culmination of feuds are expected in the one-hour broadcast. No matches have been announced yet.

MLW Fusion posts on YouTube Wednesday nights at 7 pm ET, streams on Fubo Sports Network Friday nights at 7 pm ET and 10 pm ET, and airs on beIN SPORTS Saturday nights at 10 pm ET. You can also check out MLW on DAZN, Roku, and Pluto. In addition, MLW is broadcast in over 20 countries.
