JTG is coming for Cody Rhodes’ TNT Championship

Cody Rhodes’ weekly open challenge for the TNT Championship has brought opponents far and wide. Jungle Boy, Marq Quen, Jake Hager, Sonny Kiss, and Scorpio Sky have come from within the AEW ranks. Ricky Starks, Eddie Kingston, and WARHORSE were invited as outsiders. Cody’s next challenge is Mr. Brodie Lee on Saturday night Dynamite. If Cody can retain, JTG has thrown his name into the mix after that.

“Cody Rhodes, I know you’re watching, so let me get my grill on the camera. I’m coming for that TNT Championship title. And on that night, you might have Arn Anderson, but I might have Shad Gaspard in my corner.”

JTG was already on Cody’s radar, but this confirms interest as a two-way street. Cody is undefeated in three singles bouts against JTG during 2010 and 2011 in WWE. Cody vs JTG would be an emotional bout with the memory of JTG’s Cryme Tyme partner looming large. Shad Gaspard died on May 17, 2020 after heroically putting his son first to be saved during a rip tide.

In addition to JTG, other big name stars have also shown interest. Honestly, who wouldn’t? Getting the spotlight on national television could open doors with AEW or elsewhere. Mil Muertes, Mark Jindrak, and Ryback are three of those names that get me excited.

Mil Muertes was a dominant force as Lucha Underground Champion. As Ricky Banderas and El Mesias, the man has held numerous other titles in various promotions, including four times as the AAA Mega Champion. Mil Muertes would provide a unique angle for Cody to fight international superstars with golden resumes.

Mark Jindrak may not be a huge name on the US scene, but he became a mega star in Mexico as Marco Corleone. He had a 442-day reign in CMLL as the World Heavyweight Champion.

Ryback has stated he has interest in AEW once he is fully healthy. Being a TNT Championship challenger would be a cool way for The Big Guy to make a splash.

One fellow on the indie scene that made me take notice was JR Kratos. I had never heard of him until this vignette calling out the TNT Champ picked up a little steam. That’s the kind of effort Cody appreciates in building interest.

Would you like to see JTG challenge Cody Rhodes for the TNT Championship? What odds do you give JTG to dethrone the champ?
