AEW released their latest rankings (May 13, 2020). Let’s check out the movers and shakers.
Men:
No changes this week. Jon Moxley, Cody Rhodes, and Lance Archer all picked up a win last week on Dynamite. Brodie Lee has a match tonight against Christopher Daniels. Mr. Brodie’s title shot against Jon Moxley is already confirmed for Double or Nothing on May 23, but perhaps CD could throw a wrench into the cogs with an upset victory.
Women:
Nyla Rose earned a win last week on Dynamite, while Kris Statlander and Britt Baker found success on Dark. Baker’s win pushed her from #4 to #3 above Yuka Sakazaki. Statlander and Baker will join Penelope Ford and top ranked Hikaru Shida for a four-way dance tonight. If anyone besides Ford wins, it looks likely that they will become #1 next week and slide into a title shot against The Native Beast at Double or Nothing.
Tag Team:
We have fresh blood in this week’s tag team rankings. Jurassic Express with Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus barged in at #4. Private Party boogied into #5. Both teams won contests on Dark. SCU and Lucha Bros were given the boot from the top 5.
There will be a big clash tonight on Dynamite as the Best Friends challenge Jurassic Express. The winner of that match should have the inside track toward a championship bout due to Dark Order’s inactivity.
The Young Bucks continue to be propped up by their past glory. There isn’t much of a reason why they should be #3, other than the fictitious claim of being the best tag team in the world. They certainly haven’t been the best in AEW, let alone the world. Add in inactivity, and I’d dump the Bucks, move up Jurassic Express and Private Party, then pencil in Le Sex Gods for the fifth spot.
I understand that there is this notion that the Bucks must be ranked at all times otherwise fans won’t understand that they are supposed to be a top team, but I’m not buying that logic. The majority of AEW fans know the players by now. Any new fans that come aboard will quickly catch on once they witness the Bucks’ comeback bout.
Besides, returning as an unranked squad would actually give them real hurdles to overcome. As it stands today, the Bucks only need to win a match against the Dark Order to regain the top spot. That’s not a hard road to travel in their quest to finally secure AEW gold.
Do you agree with AEW’s rankings this week? If not, what would you change?
