WWE.com

Welcome to the weekly Rumor Look Back, where we look at the rumors from six months ago and see which played out as originally stated. But first let’s knock off some old rumors from 2016.

September 6, 2016

  • While talking about the rumors WWE threatened Paige over her relationship with Alberto Del Rio, Dave Meltzer said he thinks there’s a good chance Paige could be done with WWE - “the fact that that story is out tells me that she is probably done with the company”
  • Thankfully Paige did not leave over Del Rio. Ugh, these stories. (0/1)

October 21, 2016

  • CM Punk is not expected to get another fight in the UFC.
  • They gave the man another fight. He lost, but it wasn’t as ugly as the Mickey Gall fight. (0/1)
  • Ryback could still get into MMA with Bellator but there likely won’t be anything on that until sometime into 2017.
  • Ryback has not worked MMA. (0/1)

November 1, 2016

  • Maria Kanellis-Bennett says she’s leaving wrestling soon. She’s been in graduate school and planned on making a change at some point, but TNA’s recent issues are likely speeding up her timetable.
  • Wrestlers never leave. She was active until just being released by WWE. (0/1)

Now onto this week’s rumors:

November 4, 2019

  • On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said the big announcement Renee Young was teasing for WWE Backstage was supposed to be Brock Lesnar quitting SmackDown to move to Raw but that was changed because they had to re-write SmackDown due to the travel issues in Saudi Arabia.
  • I guess we’ll never know for sure, but it’s possible.
  • He also said none of the NXT stuff was previously planned for any point, and was instead written and done the day of the show.
  • They were already advertising the three brand PPV so you’d think getting physical would happen eventually. Maybe they would have waited a little bit though.
  • The Wrestling Observer Newsletter notes Natalya and Lacey Evans made the trip to Saudi Arabia not knowing if their match at Crown Jewel would get approved. Ultimately, it was.
  • That apparently happened to Nattie the time before. They brought her and Alexa Bliss over the trip prior but nothing came of it.
  • Jinder Mahal is expected back from a knee injury early next year, says the Observer.
  • Is late April “early next year”? I’m going to say not that early. (0/1)
  • PW Insider notes TNT was only expecting 500,000 viewers for Dynamite, so they’re very happy with what AEW has delivered so far, even if numbers have fallen a bit from where they started.
  • Even the empty arena shows are exceeding those expectations.

November 5, 2019

  • There was a meeting with Vince McMahon and the Raw crew before last night’s show, according to Wrestling Observer. Management reiterated that the delays were caused by mechanical issues & nothing more, and blamed talent speculation for causing problems.
  • I don’t know if all the talent believed it.
  • They also report that Seth Rollins “attempted to do a rah-rah speech” which included telling people to keep things like this off social media.
  • Rollins shot this down and Dave Meltzer admitted that his source must have been wrong. I don’t think he was just making stuff up but his source wasn’t accurate. (0/1)
  • The Observer went on to say Vince left well before knowing there were any problems with the main charter. McMahon’s flight left at 12:40 a.m. local time, about two hours before the wrestlers and crew were supposed to even board their plane.
  • While that’s understandable, I’m sure it made the rest of the talent feel like they were left behind.
  • Randy Orton personally lobbied McMahon to stay partnered with The Revival, per Fightful.
  • It didn’t last too long, but it was a strong stable.
  • WWE added a couple well-known names in behind-the-scenes roles recently. Lance Storm announced on Twitter he’s returning to the company to work as a producer, and PW Insider says CM Punk & Colt Cabana’s trainer Christopher “Ace Steel” Guy is working in Orlando as a coach.
  • Ace Steel was hired but then was part of the April cuts. (1/1)

November 6, 2019

  • According to PW Insider, Alexa Bliss has been dealing with a shoulder injury and that’s why she’s been off television of late.
  • Bliss is often banged up.
  • WrestleVotes notes that while Seth Rollins didn’t say anything at the meeting that happened at Raw on Monday, AJ Styles did speak up.
  • I think he gave a “Don’t blame the company” type speech if I recall correctly, but don’t remember for sure.
  • On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted Velveteen Dream is injured and that’s why he’s not involved in the recent NXT invasions of Raw and SmackDown. He’s not expected back in time for Survivor Series.
  • He was out until early this year. (1/1)
  • He does note, however, that Elias could be making his return from injury at any time.
  • He was months later in the Royal Rumble. (0/1)
  • Per Insider, MLW will no longer work with The CRASH now that they’re working with AAA.
  • It looks like they didn’t do anything else with them after the AAA partnership. (1/1)

November 7, 2019

  • At one point WWE was going to do a double turn for Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt at Crown Jewel, according to Fightful Select.
  • I mean they kind of already did given everyone was pulling for Bray and Seth was being rejected. They did an official heel turn for Seth later while Bray was never a babyface.
  • A Triple Threat between the secondary title holders is planned for Survivor Series, according to Wrestling Observer Radio. It’s not guaranteed AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura and Roderick Strong will remain champs until the show though.
  • That match did happen. None of those men lost their belt prior though. (1/2)
  • AEW is planning to have Kenny Omega & Jon Moxley’s unsanctioned match go on last at Full Gear, says Dave Meltzer.
  • It was the main event. They got fined for it. (1/1)
  • Per Observer Radio, Kabuki Warriors were originally booked to win Raw’s match against Natalya & Charlotte Flair, but the script was changed.
  • They booked the Warriors in such an odd way.
  • Despite Asuka submitting in that match, the plan is still for her to feud with Becky Lynch at some point soon.
  • That was the Royal Rumble feud, so no reason she should have been tapping at all. (1/1)

November 8, 2019

  • PW Insider says Alexa Bliss hasn’t been cleared as of yesterday and she’ll be evaluated within the next few weeks.
  • She wrestled again on Nov. 30.
  • They also say Cedric Alexander had been dealing with some kind of injury the last couple weeks but it’s unclear what it was.
  • There’s also word Vince just didn’t see anything in him.
  • The Wrestling Observer Newsletter says AJ Styles pitched doing The O.C. vs. Undisputed Era at Survivor Series but it’s more likely to happen on NXT TV at some point.
  • That was a match on NXT TV. (1/1)
  • The reason Stephanie McMahon’s memoir still hasn’t been released nor has a planned release date is because there is no longer a relationship with Regan Arts, who was to publish it, says Insider.
  • I don’t think it’s come out yet.
  • Per the Observer, an idea talked about in New Japan for 2020 is breaking Evil from LIJ and pushing him as a singles star.
  • It hasn’t happened yet. There’s a lot of year left, but with them not running shows due to COVID, that could change any plans they did have.

November 9, 2019

  • There could be up to five matches at Survivor Series pitting Raw vs. SmackDown vs. NXT.
  • There were actually seven. (0/1)
  • Aleister Black is currently out with a knee injury, per the Observer.
  • He too was out until the end of the month.
  • Kenny Omega was stopped from entering Japan recently and there was apparently an attempt to get him banned from the country, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
  • Supposedly some real heat between him and NJPW at points.
  • They also say there’s “been nothing said regarding Jon Moxley at the Toyko Dome” but there’s still time for that to change.
  • He worked the Dome both nights.
  • Luchasaurus is now saying he hopes to return from injury in early 2020.
  • Maybe some working because he was back in weeks. (0/1)
