The coronavirus pandemic and its resulting restrictions on public gatherings has lead to a weird, weird couple of weeks of WWE programming, and the Women’s Tag Team Championship scene has certainly felt the effects.
That the match itself is a weird delayed rematch pitting the former champs, who lost the titles last fall, against the current champs, well, that’s par for the course in WWE, really. Usually they seem to like to get more teams in these matches, but with getting ten people together at ringside being a bad idea right now, it makes sense that that would go.
No, the really weird part is that we’ve gotten an entire build for this match (or almost an entire build, as I’m writing this on Thursday afternoon without any knowledge of the go-home show) without Kairi Sane— who is one half of the tag team champions, I might add— showing up once.
What build there’s been— and I’m about to embed all of it for your viewing pleasure— has been a bit desultory and boilerplate, but honestly the empty arena environment has lead to Nikki and Asuka shining at the commentary booth, so you win some and you lose some.
Will the Kabuki Warriors retain or can Bliss and Cross use the magic of friendship to regain the gold?
