Cody Rhodes has a chance to slay former foes in TNT Championship tournament

Yesterday brought news that AEW will be holding a tournament for the new TNT Championship. One half of the bracket was revealed tonight on Dark.

  • Shawn Spears vs Cody Rhodes
  • Sammy Guevara vs Darby Allin

Looking at these four, one of them does not belong. I’m pointing to Shawn Spears. Spears has talent, but he has been relegated to chump status this year in AEW. He has done nothing to earn this opportunity. Tully Blanchard must have called in a favor.

Sammy Guevara versus Darby Allin is a match we all want to see again. I wouldn’t be surprised if this meeting goes close to 30 minutes. Both men certainly have the motor to do so. Also, AEW will have time to fill on Dynamite with a shortened roster due to coronavirus restrictions.

When it comes time for predictions, this side of the bracket could easily become the Cody Rhodes show. He’ll have a chance to punish former rival Spears. The semifinal round would put Cody against an Inner Circle pest or a third match with a hot up-and-comer. As fans, we won’t lose either way.

The wildcard looming is Lance Archer. I don’t want to see Archer cost Cody a match. That would mean either Spears advances or Guevara and Allin would be robbed of the opportunity to brighten their star with a clean win over Cody.

The other side of the TNT Championship tournament will be revealed Wednesday night (Apr. 1) on Dynamite. The opening matches kick off on the April 8 edition of Dynamite.

Does this side of the tournament bracket excite you? Which semifinal matchup do you want to see most?
