It's a Shame That Bayley Needed a Heel Turn

Editor's note: Harold wrote this post prior to the Sept. 3 SmackDown. Her promo and actions on that episode don't alter his point, however.

Now before you all get your pitchforks, Bayley's heel turn on Mon., Sept. 2 was nothing short of amazing. She displayed awesome aggression, and this adds an all-new dynamic to Bayley's character. I'm sure most would agree that Bayley has needed something like this for some time now. With that being said, it's a shame that this heel turn had to happen.

Bayley was supposed to be the female John Cena. The woman that always did what was right. The one that would appeal to the younger crowd, and give them a pure babyface to root for. That's what was supposed to happen, but it didn't.

There are those that believe that her gimmick could never have worked on the main roster; I'm not one of those people. It absolutely could have, and should have worked.

The woman came in like a heat seeking missile. Go back and watch some of Bayley's first few months on the main roster, and you'll see that she was very over. She was fresh off her incredible run as NXT Women's Champion and went on to end Charlotte Flair's pay-per-view winning streak. All this momentum was squandered the moment she faced Alexa Bliss.

I don't know when being babyface started to mean a wrestler has to be booked to look like a punk, but it needs to stop. It doesn't do the performer any favors; look at what this type of booking did to Bayley. Her feud with Bliss was as one-sided as one-sided can be. Bliss basically questioned Bayley's toughness, only to be proven right. She took two huge blows into her popularity due to the infamous "Bayley this is your life" segment and horrendous "kendo stick on pole" match, where she was too nice to hit Bliss with the darn thing.

By this point, Bayley was already receiving boos and I can't blame fans for doing so. Nobody wants to cheer a wrestler that shows minuscule aggression.

All of this was made worse by her start-stop rivalry with Sasha Banks, only for them to become a tag-team. I actually think Bayley came out worse than Banks in all of this. Banks remained over with the crowd, which always kept her in the spotlight to some degree. Bayley, on the other hand, played the sidekick role.

Fast-forward to her Smackdown Women's Championship win. I think she could be a great babyface champion, but judging by my last post on Bayley, not everyone feels that way.

So, now WWE has a Smackdown Women's Champion who many don't view as a main-event talent anymore. That's why she needed this heel turn. It's going to be fun and interesting, but this heel turn shouldn't have needed to happen. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section.
