Coming into the women’s title match at TakeOver: Toronto tonight (Aug. 10), Shayna Baszler has been champion or in the championship picture for well over a year. She has dispatched of Ember Moon, Nikki Cross, Kairi Sane (who had defeated her for the title but lost it back), Bianca Belair, and Io Shirai.
Tonight was Mia Yim’s turn.
Mia did some work prior to tonight, taking out Shayna’s backup in Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke, securing a one on one match. Now she had to try to best the champ under the bright lights.
It was a story of Mia Yim’s fighting style against Baszler’s wrestling prowess. Mia crushed the champ’s right arm between the ring steps and the ring, giving her an advantage. It was an advantage Shayna would take back by stomping the challenger’s left arm.
Shayna worked over Mia’s arm for awhile, something that lost the enthusiasm of the crowd. Yim reverted to her own dirty tactics, such as pulling the hair, to even the odds.
Yim was able to manipulate Shayna bad arm to escape the Kirifuda clutch and then performed Baszler’s own stomp to the champ’s already bad arm. This led to Mia lockingin an arm bar that the champ reversed to another Clutch. But again Mia targeting the bad arm to escape.
Baszler called an audible and used her legs instead to lock in a triangle to earn the submission that way. Mia Yim did not get the job done.
So who’s next to step up to try to dethrone Baszler?
