AAA Triplemania presser: Blue Demon & Dr. Wagner scuffle, AAA vs AEW, Cain Velasquez in trios action

AAA’s Triplemania XXVII will take place Saturday, August 3. We had previously known that Blue Demon Jr. and Dr. Wagner Jr. would headline in mask vs hair. There was also an announcement that former UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez would step foot in the lucha libre ring to compete.

Today, July 2, AAA held a press conference to announce the full card for Triplemania XXVII. It did not go without incident. At the end, there was a scuffle between Blue Demon Jr. and Dr. Wagner Jr. We’ll get to that in a bit, but first things first. Let’s check out the full fight card.

Lucha Libre AAA
  • Mask vs Hair: Blue Demon Jr. vs Dr. Wagner Jr.
  • AAA vs AEW: Pentagon, Fenix, & Laredo Kid vs Young Bucks & Kenny Omega
  • Cain Velasquez, Cody Rhodes, & Psycho Clown vs Texano, Taurus, & a surprise luchador
  • Tables, Ladders, Chairs for Reina de Reinas Championship: Keyra (champ) vs Lady Shani vs Taya vs Tessa Blanchard vs Faby Apache vs Chik Tormenta vs La Hiedra
  • Copa Triplemania: La Parka, Pagano, Averno, Chessman, Super Fly, Puma King, Aerostar, Drago, and many more
  • Hijo del Vikingo, Myzteziz Jr., & Golden Magic vs Poder del Norte vs Pimpinela Escarlata, Maximo, & Mamba
  • Mixed Tag Championship: Niño Hamburguesa & Big Mami (champs) vs Sammy Guevara & Scarlett Bordeaux vs Lady Maravilla & Villano III Jr. vs Australian Suicide & Vanilla Vargas

My first reaction is that the women’s TLC bout is going to be fire. That is the match I’m most eager for. All of those ladies can bring the ruckus in the ring. They are a physical lot and won’t shy away from using all the weapons at their disposal.

I have a mixed reaction toward the AAA vs AEW bout. On one hand, I didn’t watch the first encounter at AEW’s Fyter Fest, so I get to enjoy a great match with fresh eyes. On the other hand, I’m a little disappointed that AAA didn’t mix it up. Lucha Bros and Young Bucks had an immediate rematch from Double or Nothing to Verano de Escándalo. This will follow the same pattern. Since the rematch will be in Mexico, it seems predictable that Fenix, Pentagon, and Laredo Kid will be victorious.

It is also a bummer that Fenix is busy in that bout. That means he won’t be defending the Megacampeonato. I believe that will be a full year without a single defense since he won the title from Jeff Jarrett at Triplemania XXVI.

Cain Velasquez in trios action should be a intriguing. I wasn’t expecting the addition of Cody Rhodes to the mix, so that was a cool surprise. Speaking of surprises, Konnan said that the surprise luchador in the match is an expert in mixed martial arts. Killer Kross seems like a prime candidate to fill that role.

The Copa Triplemania has been a battle royal in the past, but you never can tell with AAA. They have a penchant for randomly changing formats of these types of contests.

The mixed tag bout has an odd pairing in Australian Suicide and Vanilla Vargas. In story, it is rudo and tecnico. In real life, they are dating. It will be interesting to see if AAA acknowledges that on air.

I do like that there are only seven matches this year. Hopefully it will finish in the four hour range. Last year’s six-plus hour extravaganza was a bit of a chore to get through.

The show will be aired on AAA’s Twitch channels in English and Spanish.

The press conference itself was fairly standard. Dorian Roldan and Konnan sat on stage as select participants for each bout came up to say a few words. Nothing quoteworthy was stated, but we did get to listen to a Rocky IV song a bunch of times.

There were two short video clips shown. One was of Cain Velasquez.

The other was for the Triplemania XXVII main event of Blue Demon Jr. against Dr. Wagner Jr. in mask vs hair.

Things got spicy when those two legends took the stage. Wagner entered with his two sons by his side to the tune of Bon Jovi’s, “Bad Medicine.” Blue Demon walked up with the use of a cane to the sounds of, “Around the World,” by Red Hot Chili Peppers. At first, I was a little concerned that an injury may affect the quality of their future contest. It turns out that the use of the cane was for strategic purposes.

Words got heated when Blue Demon called Wagner ignorant and told him to shut up and show it in the ring. They got closer to speak face to face. Wagner wants to vindicate his name. Wagner’s fallen father and brother will give him force. Blue Demon told Wagner to let them rest and then shoved Wagner. Wagner’s sons stepped forward with bad intentions, so Blue Demon wallopped one in the shoulder and jabbed the cane at the other’s throat.

That wasn’t the only fiery interaction. During the photo opportunity, Blue Demon pointed his cane at Wagner. Wagner did not like that and mouthed off. They were kept apart but had an extremely intense staredown.

Shiiiiit. That’s what I’m talking about for an exciting press conference. That little skirmish pumped me up to the max for their Triplemania fight. Blue Demon looked like a gentlemanly badass by bopping fools with his cane. Wagner was ready to kill him in retaliation.

If you want to watch it all for yourself, video of the press conference is up on AAA’s Facebook page. It doesn’t actually begin until around the 34 minute mark.

What are you thoughts about the full card for Triplemania XXVII? Which match most stands out most to you? Did you enjoy the press conference shenanigans?
