Considering two of the founders and top stars of the company are tag team wrestlers, we knew tag team wrestling would be a focus for All Elite Wrestling. Thanks to President & CEO Tony Khan’s interview on The Steve Austin Show, we have some details.
It sounds like fans of tag team wrestling are going to be in for a treat when AEW debuts on TNT at an as-yet-unspecified date this fall:
“We’re going to establish a great tag team division. When we launch our weekly television show in the fall, we’re going to be doing a tag team tournament that’s going to have some of the greatest tag team matches ever on TV. It’s going to be a main focus of our TV. There will be teams competing to get a first-round bye in that tournament, which is a big deal. We’ll have some of the best tag teams in wrestling competing for our Tag Team Championships coming up in the fall.”
In addition this being a no brainer due to The Young Bucks role as Executive Vice-Presidents and top draws for the new company, it’s also a smart way to differentiate their product from WWE. Raw and SmackDown have made some efforts to raise the profile of their tag divisions, but it still isn’t “a main focus” as Khan says it will be on AEW TV.
The CEO also said a women’s tag division will be featured in the future, but it doesn’t sound like it’ll be launched immediately like the men’s one.
Excited to see the likes of Matt & Nick Jackson, Lucha Bros, Best Friends, The Dark Order, SCU, Jack Evans & Angelico, Private Party, Luchasaurus & Jungle Boy, and others duke it out for the belts later this year?
