Great promos, a signing & a women’s match on the latest Road to Fyter Fest

The second episode of Cody Rhodes’ The Road To Fyter Fest YouTube series hit today (June 12), and is embedded above. It’s a good mix of news and build to All Elite Wrestling’s next show on Sat., June 29 (which will stream free on B/R Live).

Here’s the big takeaways:

  • If you’re tired of WWE digs, Joey Janela’s promo for his match against Jon Moxley won’t be for you. But it’s still really well delivered, and the funeral theme is fitting for what many expect will be a crazy affair between a pair of lunatics.

  • For a lot of fans, AEW still has a lot to prove when it comes to their women’s division, and the lack of match for the women at Fyter Fest was an issue. Brandi Rhodes tried to address that with the announcement of what she swears will remain a Triple Threat pitting two of the joshi stars who wowed fans from the winning side of Double or Nothing‘s trios match - Riho and Yuka Sakazaki - against “The Beast” Nyla Rose.

  • Shawn Spears (fka Tye Dillinger) gets a hype video to announce his signing. It’s good stuff, but again relies on WWE as the foil, with Spears shown breaking out of chains and saying things like “I control my life”. Cody is then shown talking to AEW Vice President of Operations Nik Sobic and seemingly putting a ceiling on Spears by calling him a “player/coach, eventually a coach” and “a great hand”. Which sounds like saying, “don’t hold your breathe waiting for the Perfect Ten to climb higher than his guy-who-gets-eliminated-during-the-pre-show-battle-royal role from DoN,” but we’ll see.

  • Rhodes’ Fyter Fest opponent Darby Allin introduces himself in a long vignette which doesn’t do much to establish conflict with Cody, but is a heck of an advertisement for AEW’s “play your music your way” approach to their roster.
