NJPW Wrestling Dontaku Night Two results for Saturday, May 4: SANADA vs. Okada, EVIL vs. Ishii, and more

NJPW Global on Twitter

With G1 Supercard firmly in our rear view mirror, we’re moving on to New Japan Pro Wrestling’s spring spectacular on our way to Wrestling Dontaku at the beginning of May.

This year, there are five major shows on our plate, starting with last Saturday’s Sengoku Lord in Nagoya and this past Friday’s supersized Road to Wrestling Dontaku - Aki no Kuni Sengoku Emaki and Monday’s Wrestling Hi no Kuni before coming to a close with Wrestling Dontaku, which is doubled up into a two-night affair once again with night two today. All five shows, naturally, will air live and in full on NJPW World, so why not watch along with the best pro wrestling community on the internet?

Today’s action takes place in Fukuoka’s Fukuoka Convention Center, kicking off at a ripe 2AM Eastern / 11PM Pacific, and is headlined by Kazuchika Okada’s first IWGP Heavyweight Championship defense since winning the title at G1 Supercard. Plus, the show will also feature the debut of a new junior heavyweight!

Ren Narita & Shota Umino over Yota Tsuji & Yuya Uemura by pinfall with the bridging fisherman suplex from Umino on Tsuji.

Suzuki-gun (El Desperado, Minoru Suzuki, Taichi, TAKA Michinoku, & Yoshinobu Kanemaru) over Jeff Cobb, Ryusuke Taguchi, Tiger Mask IV, Toa Henare, & YOSHI-HASHI by pinfall with a superkick from Taichi on Henare.

Jushin Liger & Most Violent Players (Togi Makabe & Toru Yano) over Bullet Club (Jado, Tama Tonga, & Tanga Loa) by pinfall with a schoolboy pin from Yano on Jado.

Chaos (Hirooki Goto & Mikey Nicholls), Juice Robinson, & Tomoaki Honma over Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, Chase Owens, HIKULEO, & “Switchblade” Jay White) by pinfall with Pulp Friction from Robinson on HIKULEO.

Bullet Club’s new junior heavyweight is El Phantasmo, as expected!

Bullet Club (El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori) over Dragon Lee & Will Ospreay by pinfall with an Angel’s Wings from Phantasmo on Ospreay.

Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, Shingo Takagi, & Tetsuya Naito) over Kota Ibushi & Roppongi 3K (SHO & YOH) by pinfall with Destino from Naito on YOH.

Post-match, Naito makes it official— he’s challenging Ibushi for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship at Dominion 6.9! Kota accepts!

Hiroshi Tanahashi is here! He cuts a promo about his elbow surgery and says he just had the cast off yesterday and really wanted to be able to wrestle. He talks about coming off his G1 Climax win last year and hitting the lowest of lows, getting face-down on the mat to prove his point before rising back up and saying he’ll be back at Best of the Super Jr. finals on June 5! He’ll get higher and higher until he’s IWGP Heavyweight Champion once again!

“Switchblade” Jay White comes to the ring to confront the Ace and tells him Tanahashi is all the way at the back of the line and it doesn’t matter who wins tonight but he’s next in line. Gedo makes with the distraction and Switchblade beats Hiroshi down! The Bullet Club men target his elbow and leave him lying before Jay once again proclaims that he’s next.

Tomohiro Ishii over EVIL by pinfall with the vertical drop brainbuster.

Kazuchika Okada (c) over SANADA by pinfall with the Rainmaker to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

Post-match, SANADA refuses a handshake but offers a fist bump that Okada accepts and returns in kind.

The Rainmaker is then presented with one year of free food from Hamakatsu, as is Wrestling Dontaku tradition, before beginning his show-ending promo. He puts SANADA over and says their story as rivals is only beginning before talking about the era change in Japan from Heisei to Reiwa and pledging to continue to do his best to make everyone love professional wrestling in the new era.

The lights go out and a video plays on the tron of a man smearing black lipstick all over his face. It’s Chris Jericho, calling himself the Painmaker and challenging for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Dominion! Okada accepts!

Enjoy the show!
