Their G1 Supercard show in Madison Square Garden sold out the night before WrestleMania 35 happened in the same market. So Ring of Honor & New Japan - along with their partners the NWA & CMLL - will look to build off that success by putting on a show in Toronto two days before WWE‘s annual SummerSlam pay-per-view (PPV) in Canada’s biggest city
Summer Supercard is coming Fri., Aug. 9 to Toronto’s Mattamy Athletic Centre. The old Maple Leaf Gardens has been renovated and now has a capacity of 2,300 - 3,000, per the venue.* It’s a much smaller venue than MSG, probably due to reports of low/slow ticket sales at events like ROH’s television taping in Chicago, and G1 Climax in Dallas.
No word on the card the four allied promotions will use to sell tickets, but ROH’s announcement boasts it “will feature the greatest wrestlers from the US, Japan and Mexico competing for championships and in dream matches.”
Pre-sale of tickets for HonorClub members starts next Weds., May 22 before being available to everyone two days later. The show will stream on ROH’s subscription service, and likely on NJPW’s New Japan World, as well.
In addition to SummerSlam on Sun., Aug. 11, WWE has TakeOver: Toronto the night before and Raw & SmackDown the following Monday & Tuesday in Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena.
Interesting times...
