This has been around since Sunday night, when Kofi Kingston won the WWE title from Daniel Bryan on WWE’s biggest stage, WrestleMania 35. But in case you haven’t seen Shad Gaspard and Montel Vontavious Porter watching as that moment happened in MetLife Stadium on Sun., April 7... well, you should.
Kingston’s win was the culmination of a story which didn’t shy away from the fact he was representing for generations of wrestlers and fans of color who’ve been marginalized throughout the history of the business. Watching the emotional reaction veteran performers Gaspard (most famous as one half of WWE’s Cryme Tyme*, in case you need a reminder of how recently black wrestlers were typecast in stereotypical gimmicks with low ceilings) and MVP had to Kofi, his two sons, and his New Day brothers Big E and Xavier Woods celebrating with the belt really drives the point home.
Thanks for sharing, men.
*BTW, JTG was front row...
