Women’s Battle Royal

Women’s Battle Royal
Winner gets a trophy (and nothing else)

The Road to WrestleMania

Our story is about two weeks old. Yep, you read that correctly. For their biggest show of the year, WWE haphazardly threw together the women’s battle royal. We didn’t even get a list of competitors until about a week out from the show and the biggest star in the match - an odds on favorite to win - wasn’t going to be in the match at all until two weeks ago!

Sure, theoretically we all assumed that the women’s battle royal would be happening at WreslteMania 35 (they do have that tremendously awful trophy after all), but some kind of build around the match would have been nice.

I get it - this match (and the correlating men’s battle royal) exist as pre-show filler to get as many employees on the WrestleMania card as possible. I don’t have a problem with that - all of the wrestlers deserve to have their Mania moment and to earn that paycheck. I even get that writing a coherent story line around a large random person match is hard, but they didn’t even try with the women! Hell, even the men got lame SNL hosts and a weird story line with Braun Strowman. It’s not great, but it’s at least something!

It honestly feels like the writers didn’t know what to do with SmackDown women’s champion Asuka, so they took the belt off her, cluttered up the main event and then were like, “um, we still don’t know what to do with Asuka...wait, isn’t there supposed to be a women’s battle royal too? What do you mean we haven't announced it yet?! Let’s do that and put her in it! Man, we’re good at our jobs! * high five *”

So is Asuka going to win?

Nope. Not that it matters at all who wins this match (remember when Naomi won it and then didn’t get any title opportunity or anything out of it?), but Asuka is not going to win.

A) They clearly do not know what to do with Asuka post streak.

B) Two words: Lacey Evans.

Lacey Evans has been interrupting superstars for weeks yet has not wrestled since the Royal Rumble. She hasn’t been announced in the match, but it’s clear that they want to do something with her as she has been consistently making her presence known for months.

Having her make a late entrance “interrupting” the battle royal only to win it is a great way to reintroduce her in-ring to the WWE universe. SmackDown Live desperately needs to figure out something to do outside of Becky and Charlotte with their women’s division and a new heel competitor in the mix - one that the crowd already loves to boo - is actually an excellent use of Lacey Evans and the Battle Royal.

Sure one of these competitors could win:

Mandy Rose
Sonya DeVille
Nikki Cross
Dana Brooke
Ruby Riott
Liv Morgan
Sarah Logan
Zelina Vega
Mickie James

But they won’t

Sorry Asuka, maybe next year you won’t get screwed at WrestleMania...but I doubt it.
