In news which has been rumored from the earliest reports about what we now call All Elite Wrestling, WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has signed on as the voice of Tony Khan’s new promotion.
JR ramped up anticipation for the announcement a couple weeks back when he talked about the end of his WWE deal on his Ross Report podcast. The official announcement came today (April 3) on the latest episode of The Road To Double Or Nothing from Cody Rhodes’ YouTube channel.
Along with signing good old JR to “the most lucrative deal in pro wrestling commentary history”, the video also reveals/confirms the rest of the announce team. Alicia Atout moves over from Impact to serve as their backstage interviewer, Justin Roberts will be the ring announcer, and Ross will join Alex Marvez & Excaliber as AEW’s three man booth.
Ross and Rhodes remarks in the video make it clear All Elite will be telling a redemption story for the Oklahoman, who’ll be looking to prove “social media idiots” wrong at age 67 by showing he’s still got what it takes to call modern pro wrestling.
It’s an interesting team, and we’ll see how they gel on May 25 when Double Or Nothing comes our way on PPV from Las Vegas. Making a big deal about your announce team would seem to indicate more regular broadcasts, but there’s still no word on a television deal, or a rumored monthly event schedule.
