Game Changer Wrestling on Twitter

Welcome back to the Sermon on the Mat, your weekly one-stop shop for news from the wider world of wrestling beyond the big cable TV monoliths that get all the coverage.

This week is a little special, for somewhat obvious reasons, Cagesiders— it’s WrestleMania weekend! As such, we’re cutting results entirely in order to focus on bringing you complete cards and hype for all thirty-four shows that make our cutoff for this weekend. So, without further ado...

Coming soon...

The honor of kicking WrestleMania weekend off goes to Beyond this year, as they broadcast the inaugural edition of Uncharted Territory live from Worcester, Massachusetts! They’ve got a big card lined up, with two stellar intergender singles, a dream partner tag match pitting Grace against Cassidy, a HOT trios match pushing SCU against LAX and Dickinson, plus an international dream match as Starr main events against ECW and Zero1 legend Tanaka!

Tickets are sold out, but you can check this bad boy out on IWTV, folks.

For the first time since the name change away from Powerbomb.tv, IWTV are running their own show to kick off GCW’s family of events dubbed the Collective, and they’re doing it in style! The card has strong, strong bookends, with inaugural IWTV Independent Wrestling Champion Jonathan Gresham looking to take it back from Orange Cassidy to open the show, and the Barn Owl and the Warhorse continuing their never-ending feud with a last man standing in the main! And all throughout, matches from IWTV’s partner promotions guarantee this is a great way to sample what the best they have to offer.

Well, contractual obligations prevented it continuing under the banner of the King of Bros, but Bloodsport is back under new management, folks! And of course, still serving up a heaping helping of shoot-style grappling, and this year with a heaping helping of Japanese guests, with Hideki Suzuki and Masashi Takeda joining the fray, the latter of which is super interesting because Takeda’s primarily a deathmatch guy. But as we saw with Nick Gage last year, deathmatch guys can grapple! Plus Barnett brings his fair share of MMA crossover talent, with Frank “handed Brock Lesnar his first MMA defeat” Mir and Phil Baroni joining the fun!

The first of two MLW TV tapings this weekend, this one’s a doozy, with a surely violent title match pitting champion Lawlor against the last man to defeat him in MLW... who just so happens to be one of the modern-day kings of the deathmatch. Plus the war between the Dynasty and the Hart Foundation rolls on, Park fights Penta, an international grappling exhibition between Tanaka and Daga, and more!.

  6. Caristico, El Valiente, & Volador, Jr. vs. Gilbert el Boricua & Los Ingobernables (Bestia del Ring & El Terrible)

Just because it’s Mania weekend doesn’t mean CMLL stops bringing you your regularly scheduled dose of Friday night lucha libre action from Arena Mexico, folks! And I like the cut of this show’s jib, too-- the two top trios matches, while not guaranteed hits, are stacked enough that at least one of them should be really good, and old man Felino taking on Hechicero in a lightning match on top of that?

Check it out, as always, free for nothin’ on Marca Claro, folks, and the VOD will go up on CMLL’s YouTube channel (where they also stream shows every Monday and Tuesday free of charge) after the fact for those of you who can’t watch live.

It’s the third annual Pancakes & Piledrivers and while the originally scheduled PAC vs. Rich Swann match is off the book due to visa issues, this one is going to end with a bang regardless, because that trios match is Shane Strickland’s last match on the wider indies! He’s still booked for Evolve on 4/13, so he’s not DONE done before heading on up to New York, but this is it as far as promotions that aren’t affiliated with WWE!

Get your tickets here or check it out, live on FITE or on VOD through Highspots Wrestling Network.

  6. Chuck Taylor vs. Trent? (1-Minute Time Limit)
  7. Jonathan Gresham vs. Shinjiro Ohtani

From the ashes of NOVA Pro rises... oh dear. GCW have kept Gresham/Ohtnai from the original card and given Orange Cassidy his own show. This... this may not end well. Anyway, all you need to do is look at those stipulations to see what ol’ Freshly Squeezed is up to, with one minute time limits and odd numbers of falls and so on. And hey, they’ve managed to squeeze most of the key NOVA talent on the card thanks to a schoolyard-inspired captain’s tag!

Tickets are sold out, but you can check it out LIVE on IWTV, folks.

As always...

Remember folks, no matter what type of wrestling you like, no matter how down you feel about the state of WWE, Impact, ROH, or any other “big-time” pro wrestling, there’s something out there for you. There’s a pro wrestling product that can hit you in the right spot and make you love wrestling like you thought you’d never be able to love it again. It’s there, I promise. You just gotta reach out and find it, and that, my friends, is what the Sermon on the Mat is all about.
