AAA Roundup: Two 50 year olds beat the crap out of each other in a street fight

Let’s catch up on some news and wrestling action from AAA. There are a couple of minor nuggets, but the best were the Conquista Total episodes from Tepic. Blue Demon Jr. and Dr. Wagner Jr. put forth a heck of an effort in a street fight, Lady Maravilla continued nibbling on Niño Hamburguesa, Taya and Faby Apache resumed their beef with each other and also with Hijo de Tirantes, and there were two three-ways (Flamita vs Laredo Kid vs Drago and Jack Evans vs Taurus vs Hijo del Vikingo) worth taking the time to watch.

The two major stories since the last AAA Roundup have already been covered. If you missed it, Hijo del Fantasma (aka King Cuerno) departed from AAA to become a free agent. That relationship is over for now but may not be over forever as AAA wished Fantasma well on his journey.

In another needle-mover, Cain Velasquez signed with AAA to perform at Triplemania XXVII on August 3. The details of what he will be doing and who he will be doing it with have not been announced yet.

During that same press conference, it was announced that Triplemania XXVII would air live on TV Azteca. I’m hoping that forces AAA to be mindful of time. Last year’s show was good, but clocking in at over five hours in duration was a killer.

On the topic of television, Lucha Central reported that AAA brought in 4.4 million viewers for an episode of Conquista Total in their Friday afternoon time slot earlier this month on TV Azteca. A Sunday replay had 1.3 million viewers on a different TV Azteca channel. Meanwhile, a Saturday episode of matches from CMLL scored 1.3 million viewers on one of Televisa’s channels. That sounds impressive for both companies.

A lack of electricity last week jammed me up behind schedule for watching Conquista Total, so let’s go through a double shot of Part 1 and Part 2 from Tepic. Since there are two full episodes for this roundup, I’m only going to hit the story points and finishes.

Conquista Total: Tepic, Part 1

Hmm, the introduction was filmed on the beach. I’m guessing it was filmed in Mazatlan, since Tepic, Nayarit is not on the coast. If I recall correctly, I think the shows from both cities were filmed in the same weekend.

Mind games under a mask

The show opened (video) with La Parka in a neck brace on the mic. He explained to the crowd that he was unable to wrestle due to Hijo del Fantasma’s tombstone piledrivers. Parka appreciates support from his buddies, but this is personal. Whatever type of match Fantasma wants, Parka is ready.

Enter Dr. Wagner Jr. Bien, bien bien bien bieeeen. Wagner has Parka’s back. He then turned his attention to trash talk that traitor Blue Demon Jr. A random masked fellow showed up. In a shy voice, that dude asked to be Wagner’s second against Blue Demon in the street fight that night. Wagner asked, “Who are you? What are you doing here?”

Low blow kick to the cojones. That masked gentleman also punched Parka and booted Wagner again in the balls. Out came Blue Demon Jr., or so I thought. Demon removed his mask to reveal himself as Fantasma. It turns out that Blue Demon was the masked stranger. They proceeded to beat up Wagner and Parka. Hijo del Vikingo and Laredo Kid ran down with chairs to chase off the rudos.

Poolside flirting

Niño Hamburguesa was sitting at pool deck of a resort. (Once again, I’m guessing this was filmed in Mazatlan, since Tepic is not on the beach.) Lady Maravilla was dipping her toes into the water, which caused Hamburguesa to salivate. Maravilla chatted him up and rubbed suntan lotion on her legs.

Maravilla asked if Hamburguesa has a girlfriend. Niño replied no. (I’ve never been clear on the story relationship between Niño and Big Mami. I’m not sure if they are a couple or just mixed tag partners.) Maravilla took a photo of themselves and kissed him on the cheek upon exiting. Hamburguesa made an confused expression mixed with needing to cool down.

Lanzelot, Villano III Jr., & Lady Maravilla vs Dinastia, Niño Hamburguesa, & Lady Shani

During the match (at 17:00), Lady Maravilla had Dinastia in a submission. Niño Hamburguesa entered to break it up. He cocked his fist but couldn’t pull the trigger. Maravilla wooed him with a hug then attempted a clothesline. Hamburguesa ducked. Maravilla caressed his face once again before Villano III Jr. dropkicked Hamburguesa from behind.

For the finish, Hamburguesa bowling-balled Lanzelot. Hamburguesa went up top for a flying splash, but Maravilla got in the middle. Lady Shani swooped in for a backcracker. That cleared a path for flight as Hamburguesa came crashing down upon Lanzelot. 1, 2, 3.

Flamita vs Laredo Kid vs Drago

Definitely check out this three-way match (at 34:30) It was full of high-flying goodness.

Drago’s Latin America title was not on the line. For the finish, Drago hit a running blockbuster on Flamita. Laredo Kid broke up the pinfall. Laredo and Drago fought a little bit and that led to a Spanish Fly by Laredo Kid to win.

In a post-match promo backstage, Laredo called Fenix a glass champion because he can break at any moment. Laredo isn’t wrong. He’s had a couple bouts with Fenix canceled due to injury. Laredo finished by stating that the Megacampeonato deserves a true champion.

Street Fight: Blue Demon Jr. vs Dr. Wagner Jr.

This match deserves the full recap treatment. Faby Apache had Blue Demon Jr.’s back, while Dr. Wagner Jr. went solo. Damn, this fight (at 51:30) popped off quick with a suicide dive from Blue Demon.

On the floor, Faby put the boots to Wagner. Wagner started bleeding within the first ninety seconds, although, he was sliced open earlier in the evening. The two legends brawled into the crowd with chairs. Blue Demon stacked a pile of seats on top of Wagner and whacked the metal. Blue Demon controlled the early action with chair shots, a jogging senton on top of a chair, and Faby with a chair to chair smack to Wagner’s balls. La tortura!

Lucha Libre AAA

Even referee Hijo de Tirantes was uncomfortable with the 2-on-1 tactics. Faby threatened him with chair though, so he walked away.

Hahahahaa. Wagner turned the tide when Blue Demon missed a chair shot against the ropes and the chair bounced back to hit him in the head. Wagner hit Demon with a chair then tossed Faby over the security rail onto chairs.

Blue Demon was now bloody with his mask ripped. Wagner hit a powerbomb, but Demon kicked out. More hijinks from Faby and more chair shots to everyone. Oh man, the two gladiators squared up and beat the crap out of each other. Once both fell to the mat, Faby scurried like a cockroach to batter Wagner some more.

Taya! Taya! Taya!

Taya must have seen enough. She ran down to the ring to clobber Faby. Monster Clown! He beat up Taya. Joe Lider! He ran down to save his fellow Perro del Mal. Taya speared Faby and hit Monster with a chair. Lider did a fireman’s carry driver to Monster off the apron through a table.

Back in the ring, Wagner nailed Demon with a driver slam. 1, 2, 3. Wagner was victorious.

After the match, Faby beat up Tirantes with a whirling backbreaker. He rebounded with a huge clothesline to Faby. Taya attacked Tirantes with a fancy arm drag then running knees in the corner.

Vampiro conducted an interview with Wagner on the floor. The rudos jumped Wagner before he had a chance to say much.

Jack Evans vs Taurus vs Hijo del Vikingo

That three-way (at 8:30) was top notch and must see for a lucha libre fix. It is no surprise considering who was in the match. I’d say the top maneuver was Taurus catching a tope con hilo by Hijo del Vikingo then powerbombing him onto the floor, but there are about fifteen other awesome moves to choose from and I wouldn’t argue.

For the finish, Taurus had Jack Evans upside down on his back. Vikingo ran the ropes for a blockbuster to knock Taurus out of the ring. Vikingo set Evans up for a 450 splash but Evans sprang to life for a devastating German suplex off the top turnbuckle. Evans missed a 450 splash of his own then got tangled up in the corner. Vikingo rope-walked for a jumping double stomp. That led to a 450 splash and victory for Vikingo.

Aerostar, Maximo, & Taya vs Monster Clown, La Mascara, & Faby Apache

This trios bout (at 25:30) was all over the place, in a good way. At one point, both Faby Apache and Taya were arguing with the referee, Hijo de Tirantes, then the ladies argued with each other. Tirantes tried to step in, but both luchadoras chopped him down to the mat.

For the finish, Aerostar and Maximo did a double suicide dive to smash their rivals. That left the women one-on-one in the ring. Taya curb-stomped Faby. Tirantes was not pleased with what happened. He ducked Taya’s clothesline, but Faby accidentally dropkicked Tirantes. Tirantes responded with a super quick three count in Taya’s favor on a roll-up.

After the match, Faby had a backstage promo about Tirantes. She’s tired of him saying that she has been attacking him on purpose. Faby doesn’t need help from anyone to win her matches. She’s not interested in Tirantes anymore.

Hotel room convo

Hijo del Vikingo and Laredo Kid visited La Parka in his hotel room. They thanked Parka for all his support in their careers and were concerned about Parka’s neck injury form Hijo del Fantasma’s tombstone piledrivers. Parka said that it is his fight with Fantasma. It is personal.

Psycho Clown, Laredo Kid, & Puma King vs Hijo del Fantasma, Rey Escorpion, & Killer Kross

Silly Psycho Clown. He was ambushed yet again before the opening bell (at 47:30) by Rey Escoprion with a chair. Laredo Kid pulled double duty in Tepic. He had an earlier match in Part 1.

This bout was main event brawling with chairs, a title belt, mask ripping, biting, and a broom. It was quite lengthy with plenty of stimulating maneuvers. My favorite spot was a triple tope con hilo from the tecnicos.

For the finish, Hijo del Fantasma and Puma King were going at it. La Mascara came down to the ring as a distraction and kicked Puma in the back. Fantasma hammered a sitdown powerbomb, but Puma kicked out at two. Puma pushed Fantasma into Mascara then rolled him up for the three count. After the match, Los Mercenarios and Killer Kross beat up the tecnicos and took their masks.

AAA has really picked up their game so far this year for Conquista Total. The matches have jumped up a notch. Plus, more bouts have titles on the line or stipulations, instead of all trios all the time.

If there was any doubt about Blue Demon Jr. and Dr. Wagner Jr. putting on an entertaining main event at Triplemania XXVII, rest assured that they will do whatever it takes. Sure, the fight in Tepic was an overbooked mess, but AAA has a way of making it come together in a manner that causes you to get lost in the moment.
