AAA Rey de Reyes live results and open thread: Will the Lucha Bros win their 8th tag team title?

Marisela Peña, Lucha Libre AAA

The first of AAA’s ‘big five events’ is hours away. Rey de Reyes will take place Saturday, Mar. 16 from Puebla, Puebla.

The show will be available for free live streaming on Twitch in Spanish and English. The start time is listed for 8 pm Mexico City time, but there might be a pre-show. Important note: Mexico hasn’t had a daylight saving time change yet, so it is best to think of it as 10 pm ET and adjust accordingly.

If you can’t watch live, pay 5 dollars for a monthly subscription on Twitch to get on-demand access at your leisure. Or, wait a few weeks until it pops up on YouTube as part of AAA’s TV show, Conquista Total.

The main event will be Fenix and Pentagon competing for the tag team titles against champs Texano and Rey Escorpion. The Lucha Bros are attempting to win their eighth tag team championship; AAW, Crash, Impact, MLW, PWG, WAR, and XMW.

The namesake Rey de Reyes tournament includes plenty of high flyers and a badass sword for the winner.

Quick results:

Impromptu main event: Young Bucks defeated Lucha Bros to win the AAA tag team championship. After the Lucha Bros won gold from Los Mercenarios, Konnan came out to set up a match against the Young Bucks there and now. It was a back and forth bout until the Bucks used the outlawed tombstone piledriver to Fenix on the floor. They did it again to Pentagon inside the ring to become new champs.

Tag Team Championship: Fenix & Pentagon defeated Texano & Rey Escorpion to win the tag titles. The Lucha Bros picked up the pace, while Los Mercenarios used a divide and conquer strategy. In the end, the Lucha Bros were the better team. They did their teamwork finisher of a flying double stomp by Fenix into a package piledriver by Pentagon.

Rey de Reyes Tournament: Aerostar is king. The match was one minute intervals with eliminations by pinfall or submission. The final two were Aerostar and Laredo Kid. After some dramatic kick outs, Aerostar connected on an outside in springboard Code Breaker then a rolling cutter to win.

Cage Match: Psycho Clown, Maximo, & Mamba defeated Jeff Jarrett, Killer Kross, & La Mascara. This cage match had luchadores escaping, returning, and escaping again. Jarrett was first to leave. Mamba next. Kross exited after Mascara gave him the confident okay that he could handle his beaten down cousins. Maximo was out of the cage after that. The big finish involved Mascara trying to escape, but Psycho got him from behind for a huge super powerbomb through a table. Psycho escaped to cement the victory.

Los OGT’s (Averno, Chessman, & Super Fly) defeated Pagano, Drago, & Puma King. Averno hit a double underhook super facebuster to pin Drago. The bigger story was Super Fly with a potential neck injury. He was powerbombed by Puma King off the apron onto a table, except it came up short. Super Fly’s head and neck slammed hard against the edge of the table. Health update: Backstage passed word that Super Fly will be okay.

Poder del Norte (Mocho Cota Jr., Carta Brava Jr., & Tito Santana) defeated Perros del Mal (Taya, Daga, & Joe Lider). Daga turned on Lider by slamming him through a ladder. Tito Santana followed with a flying dropkick to Lider’s butt area. Santana and Brava did a double pin to secure the win.

Reina de Reinas Street Fight: Lady Shani retained against La Hiedra, Keyra, and Chica Tormenta. Shani won via powerbomb to Hiedra onto a pile of chairs. The big spot was a Spanish Fly by Keyra to Tormenta off the apron through a slab of wood/make-shift table.

Cody Rhodes appearance: Cody Rhodes mentioned that AEW wants to bring big names like Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho to Mexico. He was interrupted by Konnan, Taurus, Texano, and Rey Escorpion. Konnan threatened Rhodes that he needs to check with him next time making an announcement. Fisticuffs ensued. Psycho Clown, Taya, Lady Shani, Drago, and Aerostar made the save.

Mixed Tag Championship: Niño Hamburguesa & Big Mami defeated Villano III Jr. & Lady Maravilla to retain their belts. Hamburguesa pinned Villano off a flying splash. The story was Lady Maravilla being a temptress to Hamburguesa. He refused to let Mami crush her during the match. Afterward, Hamburguesa carried Maravilla to the back and left Mami high and dry in the ring.
