Sammy Guevara can win Cody’s PPV title shot on the Dynamite premiere

All Elite’s said wins and losses will matter in the company. Even after they announced Cody Rhodes as the challenger for World champ Chris Jericho’s title at their Full Gear pay-per-view (PPV) on Nov. 9, the AEW Executive Vice-President said his shot was contingent on not losing en route to the show in Baltimore.

But they hadn’t said that anyone who beats him would take the shot... which is what Rhodes said on a conference call promoting tomorrow’s premiere of AEW Dynamite on TNT earlier today.

Regarding his episode opening match with Sammy Guevara in Washington, D.C., Cody told the media:

“I would like to make it clear, that if Sammy Guevara beats me, I’m not going to Full Gear to wrestle Chris Jericho, by no means. Sammy Guevara will be able to take my place if he wins on the first episode of Dynamite. So, the stakes are high.”

This feels like it telegraphs the outcome of the Oct. 2 Rhodes/Guevara match even more. When they revealed a loss would cost Cody his Full Gear shot at Jericho, it was still unlikely he’d lose. But if AEW could build another contender like Kenny Omega or Jon Moxley in that time, it wasn’t completely implausible. I have a much harder time believing they would promote a Guevara vs. Jericho match for their first PPV after launching TV - although I suppose Sammy could lose his championship opportunity to someone else between tomorrow and next month, too.

It’s not necessarily an issue, but this answer is a little confusing as it’s not simply the “it’s really about the data and who has the best record” response Cody gave last month.

Guevara’s record is 0 - 1 in singles, and 1 - 1 overall, by the way.
