Rumor Look Back: Mar. 2 - 8, 2018

WWE.com

Welcome to the weekly Rumor Look Back, where we look at the rumors from six months ago and see which played out as originally predicted. Let’s jump right into it.

March 2, 2018

  • Dave Meltzer in The Observer noted that John Cena’s promo on Raw specifically referencing Undertaker was done to make people think it’s not actually going to happen. At the time of the promo at least, it was still scheduled.
  • The match happened at WrestleMania, though we didn’t know for sure until the last second. (1/1)
  • There are all kinds of rumors floating around on Rey Mysterio, mostly from Twitter, saying he was at SmackDown simply visiting, some saying he wasn’t there at all, and others even saying there are reports being leaked to make fans think the Cena vs. Undertaker match isn’t happening.
  • A lot of talk about Mysterio, who is still not in the WWE.
  • For what it’s worth, the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports Mysterio is scheduled to meet with Triple H “very soon” and a deal is dependent on Rey being able to work part time.
  • The man deserves a somewhat part-time schedule at this point.
  • According to the Observer, WWE is offering deals on some good seats at Fastlane, so tickets aren’t moving all that well right now.
  • SmackDown was some garbage at the time so I can understand that people may not have been eager to shell big bucks for tickets.
  • Braun Strowman & Alexa Bliss vs. The Miz & Asuka was the original plan for the Mixed Match Challenge final, per the Observer, but with WrestleMania plans changing that may no longer be the case.
  • It was the Robe Warriors of Charlotte and Bobby Roode instead of Strowman and Bliss. We don’t know what the original plan was though.

March 3, 2018

  • Ronda Rousey is not expected to work house shows anytime soon and even when she does, it will likely be infrequent.
  • First was in April in Europe, so soon enough. They are infrequent though. (1/2)
  • Per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is privately “on top of” the situation with Roman Reigns and possibly other wrestlers being accused of purchasing substances or PEDs from Richard Rodriguez. Filmmaker Jon Bravo has promised they will release information soon.
  • Love these rumors because of how much of a dud the reveal was.
  • The Observer notes that while there were many UFC stars in the front row for Elimination Chamber, WWE issues a directive not to interview them or promote them on the show in any way.
  • That’s odd for WWE, who just LOVES to be considered cool.
  • SI said that Samoa Joe was one of the guys John Cena requested a match with at WrestleMania 34.
  • That match hasn’t happened but it’s one I’d like to see.

March 5, 2018

  • Ronda Rousey is expected to appear on Raw tonight, according to PW Insider.
  • She had an altercation with Triple H and Stephanie. (1/1)
  • Per the Observer, WWE did indeed book Brock Lesnar in a 35-second house show squash over Kane the way they did to help turn him heel leading up to WrestleMania 34. So even though it was a house show, it was still part of the storyline they’re running with him.
  • That makes sense.
  • The Melbourne Herald-Sun is now saying WWE will indeed run the 100,000 seat arena MCG in Melbourne for a pay-per-view in October. Apparently the announcement for this will happen at WrestleMania 34.
  • It’s happening, but it was announced in June. (1/2)
  • If Rey Mysterio did suffer a torn biceps, then it wouldn’t necessarily preclude WWE from signing him, per the Observer. But it is still up in the air.
  • He did suffer that injury but hasn’t signed with WWE yet. We don’t know if that had any correlation or if he just wasn’t ready to sign with WWE.

March 6, 2018

  • While Impact officials believe he’ll be signing a new deal with them, on PW Insider Elite Audio, Mike Johnson said he’s heard “rumblings of interest” from WWE about bringing Alberto El Patron/Del Rio back to the company because “Vince McMahon just loves Alberto”
  • He was released from Impact for no-showing an event. It was prime Del Rio. He’s not with WWE thankfully.
  • 205 Live will introduce cruiserweight tag titles after WrestleMania, per PW Insider.
  • There aren’t any tag titles in 205. I’d personally like to see them introduce trios titles instead to make it different than the other promotions in WWE. But right now, it’s just the main singles title. (0/1)
  • NXT tag champ Bobby Fish suffered a knee injury at the Indianapolis house show on Sunday. The severity isn’t known yet, but Wrestling Observer says if he’ll be out for a while, TakeOver: New Orleans changes will be revealed at their taping on Wednesday.
  • It actually wasn’t revealed at the taping but in a backstage segment to keep it secret. Adam Cole had to pull double duty but in the end, Roderick Strong switched sides. (0/1)
  • There’s talk of Ronda Rousey working WWE’s March 16 house show in Madison Square Garden, according to PW Insider, possibly as her first official match.
  • She did not wrestle at this show. (0/1)

March 7, 2018

  • Fastlane isn’t expected to feature any title changes, though there may be a big angle planned for the main event.
  • Randy Orton won the US title. AJ Styles retained in the main event and there was nothing interesting about it. (0/2)
  • According to PW Insider, there was “word making the rounds” at Raw last week that there could be more wrestlers added to the Intercontinental title match at WrestleMania 34.
  • It stayed as a triple threat, which was announced days prior to this rumor. (0/1)
  • PW Insider notes that Alberto El Patron returning to AAA for Triplemania is a one-time appearance. That likely means it wouldn’t affect any other deals he could be working to make.
  • Triplemania recently happened and Alberto didn’t appear on it. They announced it, but then it fell through.

March 8, 2018

  • John Cena is not advertised for dates after the April 9 Raw in New Orleans, and isn’t featured on promotional materials for SummerSlam or Survivor Series, leading to speculation he may be focusing on movie and TV work after WrestleMania.
  • He was at the Greatest Royal Rumble, for outside that, not on TV at all. (1/1)
  • Drew McIntyre is back working out at the Performance Center, says PW Insider. The site speculates he’s on target for a return by WrestleMania.
  • He returned after WrestleMania during the Shake-Up. (0/1)
  • Rey Mysterio’s arm injury is not believed to be a complete biceps tear. As mentioned here before, it’s still believed he’ll be meeting with WWE about a return despite the injury.
  • Luckily for Rey, it was something he could rehab instead of missing a bunch of time. (1/1)
  • Twitter user BeltFanDan shared a design for the rumored WWE Cruiserweight Tag Team Titles he says have been confirmed by “a few legit sources”.
  • They’re clearly not since these belts don’t exist. (0/1)

This week: 6/16 - 38%

Overall: 2,355/4,266 - 55.2%
