Cup of coffee in the big time: ALL IN’s legacy secured by a card that delivered

ALL IN is a few days in the books, but because this is the start of the work week, let’s talk about it today.

I made no secret of my feelings on the card and the fact it wasn’t really my cup of tea. That was fine, of course. It’s unreasonable to expect every card to be for every fan.

In the end, the card well outpaced my wildest expectations. The matches I expected to be great were, especially Joey Janela damn near killing himself in his quest to remain one of the top “must see” men on the indies.

Where the card really excelled was in its fan service. If you followed along with the creation of the event and all the associated YouTube series, and especially if you really invested in the stories told on them, you got top to bottom payoffs in ways an ongoing product can rarely provide.

Before the event, I wondered how much of the already profoundly successful event’s legacy hinged on the card delivering.

After the event, there’s no real mystery left. The event was a financial and artistic success.

That’s not to say things were perfect. Production was largely a mess. The audio issues were impossible to ignore, there were problems with lighting, the camera work was not exactly up to the level I expected.

And it’s not so easy to brush that aside with the set and other production elements. There was money put into the event, and presentation seemed important, except when it came to the broadcast.

When talking to Cody Rhodes before ALL IN, he told me, “I have a lot of experience with pro wrestling and Matt and Nick do as well. We’ve seen things we don’t like in production and we’ve seen things we love in production. We have a lot of production resources in house with Ring of Honor, but we also have a lot of production resources from our careers overall. So we just tried to pool the best of the best people to get that together. That’s why [announcing the broadcast options] took a little longer than expected.”

If ALL IN gets a sequel, here’s hoping the broadcast production is brought up to meet the standards of all other elements.
