Rumor Look Back: Mar. 23 - 29, 2018

Welcome to the weekly Rumor Look Back, where we look at the rumors from six months ago and see which played out as originally predicted. Let’s jump right into it.

March 23, 2018

  • According to the Observer, Roman Reigns will be working with Samoa Joe after WrestleMania 34, though they do add the caveat that “that can change.”
  • That was the first feud he had. Even though it wasn’t for a title, it main evented Backlash. (1/1)
  • Speaking of Joe, they also say he will be back in time for the European tour of May and he is “pretty much waiting on creative.”
  • Well he was working with Roman right after Mania, so of course he was ready for a tour in May. (1/1)
  • Piggybacking on recent reports of WWE talking to Hulk Hogan again, WrestleVotes is saying he could be back “relatively soon.”
  • I wouldn’t say he’s back. He’s back in the Hall of Fame (and honestly, should never have been out of it), but he hasn’t been on TV or anything. (0/1)
  • Per Dave Meltzer, WWE apparently said AJ Styles will be working house shows this weekend, so whatever his injury is it may not be as serious as thought.
  • He did work house shows that weekend, according to cagematch. (1/1)
  • Apparently Vince McMahon announced the return of the XFL so early because he found out about the new football league Charlie Ebersol would be launching.
  • We haven’t heard much about the XFL lately.

March 24, 2018

  • WWE may be planning on going with the idea of keeping Braun Strowman’s tag team partner a mystery until the title match at WrestleMania 34.
  • We didn’t find out until he pulled the kid out of the crowd. (1/1)
  • Bray Wyatt may have a different character when we see him next, according to the Observer. Or at least something might change with him.
  • He was supposedly purged of Sister Wyatt by his swim in the Lake of Reincarnation. It didn’t alter his character much though. (1/1)
  • The Wrestling Observer Newsletter notes that Bayley was taken out of the mixed tag team match at Madison Square Garden, where she was advertised to team with Elias against John Cena and Nikki Bella, because she hasn’t turned heel yet.
  • She still hasn’t turned heel.
  • Per the Observer, Jason Jordan should be back in time for the European tour in May.
  • Unfortunately, Jordan is still out and word is he unfortunately may never be able to wrestle. (0/1)

March 26, 2018

  • David Bixenspan said WWE told him women will not be wrestling at the Greatest Royal Rumble event in Saudi Arabia next month but women and children are allowed to attend the show.
  • That’s true. Women were in the crowd but not female wrestlers were not wrestling. Their business with the Saudi government isn’t the best look. (2/2)
  • One of the rumors going around now regarding Hulk Hogan possibly returning to WWE is as SmackDown Live General Manager.
  • That spot went to Paige. (0/1)
  • The Observer reports that WWE is finally going to be moving ahead with a U.K. project this year, like a TV show and maybe even a Performance Center over there.
  • It’s still “coming soon.” We’ll see if it happens this year sometime.
  • Garza, Jr. and Ultimo Ninja could be signing with WWE soon, per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
  • Looking into it, Ultimo Ninja already debuted as Humberto Carrillo. I haven’t found any announcement from WWE about either man being part of the class and while word is Garza has signed I don’t see anything so I’ll sit on it for a bit. (1/1)

March 27, 2018

  • Undertaker vs. John Cena is still the plan for WrestleMania, and should be officially set-up next Monday on Raw.
  • It was the plan but was never officially set up. (1/2)
  • According to Wrestling Observer, Shane McMahon’s hospitalization is “legitimate and not part of the storyline”.
  • That’s true. He had a hernia and diverticulitis apparently. The madman wrestled at WrestleMania anyway. (1/1)
  • His availability for WrestleMania is obviously in doubt, and SmackDown will likely start setting up “Plan B” for Daniel Bryan’s planned match against Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn tonight.
  • While there was a Plan B (Chris Jericho), this episode set up Shane for WrestleMania and not a replacement. (0/1)
  • Dean Ambrose has been pulled from a scheduled WrestleMania Axxess appearance, leading to speculation either he’s suffered a setback in recovery from his triceps injury or could be primed for a surprise appearance at WrestleMania.
  • It was the former. He had complications after surgery (and was not a surprise appearance). (1/2)

March 28, 2018

  • Shane McMahon is expected back as early as next week and while some believe now that his health issues are storyline, every indication is they are legitimate.
  • He was back the next week to promote his WrestleMania match. The injuries were legitimate though. (2/2)
  • Charlotte is also expected to return to television next week, and may not even miss house shows this weekend.
  • This is correct on both accounts. (2/2)
  • PW Insider notes WWE may be looking at doing a series on cooking and fitness, with a recent trademark filing for “Talking Snack.”
  • That show doesn’t exist. (0/1)
  • Per Wrestling Inc, the woman Asuka beat on Raw this week, Jamie Frost, was wrestling her very first pro wrestling match.
  • This is somewhat surprising. You’d think they’d choose someone who has some experience.

March 29, 2018

  • According to Sports Illustrated, if Rey Mysterio can get cleared, Vince McMahon is “strongly considering” using him as Braun Strowman’s partner at WrestleMania.
  • I guess there’s a bit too much unknown to officially say no to this (which is one of the things that skews the ratio towards the positive).
  • Various sites and Twitter users report the WWE app on Tuesday night sent then quickly deleted a notification saying SmackDown’s Tag Title Triple Threat at WrestleMania would be a TLC match.
  • It was not a triple threat so the mistake wasn’t an accurate rumor. It was actually a very short match. (0/1)
  • Betting sites have an appearance by The Rock at WrestleMania 34 as a near sure thing, with some offering odds at 1/100, or 99%, that he shows up in New Orleans.
  • He was not there. (0/1)
  • Raw house shows are said to be advertising Asuka vs. Nia Jax in April and May.
  • That did not indicate any future plans. (0/1)

This week: 15/25 - 60%

Overall: 2,390/4,332 - 55.2%

Have a great week, everyone!
