The largest party of the summer is in the books, and four new champions were crowned.
But how did Cagesiders’ rate the 13 matches? Read on to get all the scores from cSs, Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer and ESPN.com. Plus an update on the top ten performers of the current season, which began at last year’s Survivor Series.
Highest Rated match of the night
Intercontinental Title match: Dolph Ziggler v Seth Rollins - Cageside Rating: 4.29
Votes: 316 |
Meltzer Rating: 3.75 |
ESPN Rating: 4 |
2017/18 rank: 6th out of 108 |
The main card opener stole the show for Cagesiders. The rematch outscored their Extreme Rules Iron Man match (3.90), and continued Rollins’ post run of scoring at least 3.75 dating back to WrestleMania. This is Ziggler’s highest rated match, and is Seth’s fourth match in this season’s top ten.
2nd Place
WWE Title match: AJ Styles v Samoa Joe - Cageside Rating: 4.24
Votes: 316 |
Meltzer Rating: 4.25 |
ESPN Rating: 3.75 |
2017/18 rank: 7th |
Meltzer’s match of the night, and the smallest Meltz’s gap recorded for the WWE title clash. SummerSlam is a banner event for Joe. At last year’s event, he was part of third highest rated match of 2016/17 in the Universal Title four way against Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns and Finn Balor.
3rd Place
The Miz v Daniel Bryan - Cageside Rating: 3.91
Votes: 316 |
Meltzer Rating: 3.75 |
ESPN Rating: 3.5 |
2017/18 rank: 20th |
The A Lister continues his stellar year, with a third place position with his career nemesis Daniel Bryan. This is Bryan’s highest rated match. His previous clashes with the artist formerly known as Big Cass and tag team bout with Kane against the Bludgeon Brothers rated lower than 3.
4th place
SmackDown Live women’s title match: Carmella v Charlotte Flair v Becky Lynch - Cageside Rating: 3.74
Votes: 314 |
Meltzer Rating: 3.5 |
ESPN Rating: 3.25 |
2017/18 rank: 31st |
Carmella’s reign as SmackDown Live women’s champion has not gone down well at all. Going into Summerslam, her title matches averaged 1.90. Working with both Charlotte and Becky clearly brought the best out of the Staten Island Princess, as she nearly doubled that rating.
5th place
WWE Cruiserweight title match: Cedric Alexander v Drew Gulak - Cageside Rating: 3.63
Votes: 96 |
Meltzer Rating: 3.25 |
ESPN Rating: N/A |
2017/18 rank: 36th |
This was only the fourth Cruiserweight match to appear on a PPV card this year. Like it’s predecessor it scored a three plus rating. This is the lowest ranked match of Alexander’s three title matches, which shows how highly regarded he is by sections of the Cageside audience.
6th place
US Title Match: Shinsuke Nakamura v Jeff Hardy - Cageside Rating: 3.34
Votes: 172 |
Meltzer Rating: 2 |
ESPN Rating: 1.75 |
2017/18 rank: 50th |
This match received a significantly higher score than the original PPV clash at Extreme Rules (2.7) despite both the professional critics being underwhelmed by the match. This received the same score as Jeff’s battle with Randy Orton at Backlash, which got nine more votes.
7th place
Finn Balor v Baron Corbin - Cageside Rating: 3.31
Votes: 370 |
Meltzer Rating: 1 |
ESPN Rating: 1.25 |
2017/18 rank: 52nd |
The Balor Club were out in force for this vote, as his squash of the Constable was rated significantly higher by the Community than both ESPN and Meltzer. The 2.31 differential between CSS and Meltzer is the second biggest ‘Meltz gap’ of the season, behind the 2.7 gap Nakamura and Hardy received at Extreme Rules.
8th place
Bludgeon Brothers v New Day - Cageside Rating: 3.15
Votes: 126 |
Meltzer Rating: 3.5 |
ESPN Rating: 3.25 |
2017/18 rank: 55th |
This is the only match which received a higher score from both the professional critics. It is the highest rated Bludgeon Brothers match. Conversely, it is the second lowest ranked New Day match. Their worst scored match was also against Harper and Rowan as well as The Usos at WrestleMania.
9th place
WWE Universal title match: Brock Lesnar v Roman Reigns - Cageside Ranking: 2.91
Votes: 885 |
Meltzer Rating: 2.5 |
ESPN Rating: 3 |
2017/18 rank: 71st |
The end of Lesnar’s reign brought about a spilt reaction, which has typified the latter months of his run. The similar number of votes 5,3 and 0 received show the schizophrenic nature of the vote. Roman’s coronation victory did receive a higher score than both their WrestleMania and Greatest Royal Rumble clashes.
10th place
Rusev & Lana v Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas & Zelina Vega - Cageside Rating: 2.79
Votes: 86 |
Meltzer Rating: 1.25 |
ESPN Rating: N/A |
2017/18 rank: 76th |
Meltzer’s least favourite pre-show match comes in tenth. The lowly ranking is a rare blip for Rusev this season, as it’s only the second time in eight matches he has scored below 3. This compares to five score of 2.5 or less out of six matches for the Bulgarian brute in 2016-17.
11th place
Raw Tag title match: B Team v The Revival - Cageside Rating: 2.55
Votes: 70 |
Meltzer Rating: 1.5 |
ESPN Rating: N/A |
2017/18 rank: 89th |
The Raw tag title match garnered the least number of votes. It continued the red brand tag division mediocre year. Only The Bar’s WrestleMania loss to the makeshift outfit of Nicholas and Braun Strowman has scored over three in 2018.
12th place
Raw Women’s title match: Alexa Bliss v Ronda Rousey - Cageside Rating: 2.1
Votes: 528 |
Meltzer Rating: 2 |
ESPN Rating: 1.75 |
2017/18 rank: 101st |
Unlike the Demon’s demolition of Baron Corbin, Ronda Rousey demolition of Alexa Bliss didn’t gain the same level of adoration. The match is Alexa’s lowest score of the season, and her second entry in the bottom ten. (Her match against Nia Jax at Extreme Rules scored 2.24).
13th place
Kevin Owens v Braun Strowman - Cageside Rating: 1.48
Votes: 299 |
Meltzer Rating: 0.5 |
ESPN Rating: 0.75 |
2017/18 rank: 107th |
Braun’s demolition of KO rounds up the scoring for SummerSlam. Only Carmella’s Extreme Rules win over Asuka (1.24) has rated lower. Cagesiders clearly hate seeing Owens get squashed. This is the second time the former Universal champion has received a 1 score, his loss to Goldberg at ls year’s Fastlane still has the lowest recorded average (1.1).
2017/18 - Match average ratings: Comparison to last year and rest of 2017
SummerSlam achieved a higher average match rating (3.19) than last year’s (3.05). This was largely due to last years card having four matches which scored less than 2.5 stars compared to two this year. It’s score places it eighth overall for this season
Fastlane - 3.34
WrestleMania 34 - 3.31
Greatest Royal Rumble 3.29
Clash of Champions - 3.27
Survivor Series - 3.26
Money in the Bank - 3.24
Elimination Chamber - 3.19
SummerSlam - 3.19 - (Meltzer average) 2.59
Royal Rumble - 3.15
Extreme Rules - 3.08
Backlash - 2.91
