There's Got to Be a Swerve Coming

Oftentimes when I write these pieces, I’m wishful thinking about something and I almost feel like it dooms the chances of what I want to happen actually happening. This one is a little different though. I think there is a good chance that what I’m hoping for actually happens. Of course I’m talking about Ronda Rousey signing her Raw contract at Elimination Chamber and the great possibility (and necessity frankly) of a swerve occurring.

Last night on Monday Night Raw, Kurt Angle just randomly walked out and announced that Ronda Rousey would be signing her Raw contract at the February 25th PPV. My first thought was to throw my hands in the air and scream "noooooooo!" but then I realized that there was still hope. Hope that Ronda Rousey won’t be subjected to the awful to nonexistent writing for women of the Raw creative team. Hope that she’ll have an actual wrestling match at WrestleMania as opposed to a mixed tag-team debacle with Stephanie McMahon. The reason that there is still hope is twofold.

On the one hand it was, as I said earlier, random. Ronda debuted at the end of the Royal Rumble. On Raw and Smackdown the following two nights that clip was replayed. That was all the mention there was of Ronda Rousey. The following week (last week) there was no mention at all of Ronda or any negotiations between the brands over where she was going to sign. I cannot imagine that WWE would be foolish enough to throw away a golden story opportunity, like "which brand will Ronda sign with". Therefore, if they’re going straight to a contract signing there must be a swerve coming. Daniel Bryan and/or Shane McMahon must show up in Las Vegas and present a counter offer to Ronda before she signs her contract.

The prospect of either of them showing up is leads me to my second point. There’s never been a neat and clean contract signing in WWE history. Going all the way back to the first Royal Rumble in 1988 when Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan signed their contract to meet in their WrestleMania III rematch on The Main Event, contract signings have always devolved into chaos. That’s why I believe Shane or Daniel have to show up and maybe bring Charlotte Flair with them. Charlotte has no clear direction for WrestleMania. Carmella will likely cash in her Money in the Bank briefcase and win the title leading to Charlotte regaining it from her at Fastlane. I don’t see Charlotte vs. Carmella as a WrestleMania match therefore Charlotte has no direction. Also Charlotte is the only woman to mention Ronda Rousey by name since the latter debuted at the Rumble.

I hope that Shane or Daniel entice her to come over to Smackdown where she can feud with Charlotte and Kurt Angle ends up with egg on his face furthering the existing tension between him and Stephanie. The alternative is just too terrible to contemplate.
