The Authors of Pain vs The Bar
Raw Tag Team Champions vs SmackDown Tag Team Champions for Brand Supremacy
If you clicked on this post thinking, “Oh yeah, that match is happening” you’re not alone. So much focus on the main roster has been (rightfully) focused elsewhere that this match truly feels like the bathroom break. Don’t get me wrong, I love both of these teams, but the build to this match has been practically non-existent, so it’s hard to get excited.
But in the interest of building some excitement, let’s take it back to the beginning.
The Road to Survivor Series
Big Show, heel extraordinaire
On SmackDown 1000 The Bar faced then tag team champions The New Day. There was nothing particularly spectacular about this other than two fantastic teams putting on another entertaining match. The tag belts on SmackDown had felt a little stale, but, again, the matches were good so at least it was entertaining.
New Day was putting up a good fight, Big E using his power, Xavier his high flying and Kofi running interference on the outside, but The Bar, working in tandem, soon got the upper hand. Set to not only destroy The New Day, but to also destroy their fun, The Bar cleared the pancake covered announce table and began to prep for the ultimate breakfast related destruction.
But than something totally out of the blue happened. The Big Show’s music hit. Sure it was SmackDown 1000, and The Big Show has been an integral part of it’s history, but really The Big Show, now?
If you don’t recall, The Big Show had been a face for a while. He left on injury, got swole and started to become the face of WWE’s philanthropic efforts.
But it’s The Big Show. If there is one thing we know about him, it’s he just can’t help himself. He’s turned more times than a revolving door.
Big Show put Kofi (the non-competing member) through the announce table, distracting Big E (the legal man) just in time for him to receive a brogue kick to the face.
Boom. New tag team champions. Welcome Back Big Show.
DRAKE MAVERICK & his monsters
On October 22, Roman Reigns made the heartbreaking announcement that he would be temporarily leaving WWE to fight his Leukemia. His SHIELD brothers came out to support him in his announcement, presenting themselves as united and familial. Sure, Dean Ambrose is a lunatic, but he’s their lunatic....right? WRONG.
On the very same night, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose won the tag titles from McIntrye and Ziggler. Their victory was cut short, however, when Ambrose, despite their victory turned on Rollins.
As the Rollins/Ambrose feud heated up we all were wondering, “what happens to the tag titles?” Well, lucky for DRAKE MAVERICK and his clients, two weeks later, on November 5th, Seth Rollins was forced to defend his titles with or without his SHIELD brother per acting general manager Baron Corbin’s request. AOP handily won the tag titles in what should have been their crowning achievement on RAW, but was in actuality a story line all about Seth and Dean.
The following week AOP didn’t even appear on RAW to hype their Survivor Series match.
Such is life.
What’s at stake?
To be honest, not much. Whoever wins gets to say that their brand is the best, but in the grand scheme of things, no one is really going to be talking about this tag match. Personally, I hope AOP wins to give their rise to the championship a little more weight, but with the world’s largest athlete in The Bar’s corner it’s doubtful.
