Rumor Look Back: July 14 - 20, 2017

Welcome to the weekly Rumor Look Back, where we look at the rumors from six months ago and see which played out as originally predicted. Let’s get right to it.

July 14, 2017

  • It still looks like John Cena is in line to challenge for the Universal championship at WrestleMania 34, whether it’s on Roman Reigns or Brock Lesnar.
  • It’s still possible, but we’ll see soon. Sounding like he may fight the Undertaker, who hopefully doesn’t look as terrible just moving as he did last year.
  • According to the Observer, some within GFW want Alberto El Patron fired (from the corporate side, mostly) and some want him to stay (from the wrestling side, mostly).
  • The funny thing about this is that the wrestling side (Jarrett and co) left but Anthem still kept Berto around. Patron is already talking about another return to the WWE.
  • WWE may be heating up Bray Wyatt for a main event program later this year.
  • Ha! Even though he was world champion less than a year ago, I still look at him as a midcarder. He didn’t sniff a title in late 2017. (0/1)
  • Not surprisingly, the new speculation is the Raw women’s title match at SummerSlam will feature Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax vs. Sasha Banks vs. Bayley.
  • It was just Bliss vs. Banks. (0/1)
  • The Observer is now reporting New Japan may not be doing anything during WrestleMania 34 weekend after all.
  • We graded one saying the opposite incorrect last week. So obviously this one will be correct. If last minute they end up in New Orleans, we won’t need to correct anything as the numbers are even. (1/1)

July 15, 2017

  • PW Insider notes there is a lot of talk Nikki Bella will return for SummerSlam.
  • She hasn’t been seen since her WrestleMania tag match with John Cena. At the Women’s Rumble maybe? (0/1)
  • The word is WWE is likely going to sign up to 10 wrestlers from the Mae Young Classic.
  • There are at least ten from the MYC who are with WWE, though some may have been signed prior. Candice LeRae was just signed! (1/1)
  • Enzo Amore is apparently upset about WWE deciding to break up his tag team with Big Cass.
  • Understandable given the tag team with his meal ticket. That being said, he’s done very well for himself without Cass.
  • Kyle O’Reilly and Adam Cole are expected to start with WWE soon.
  • KOR started at the taping prior to TakeOver: Brooklyn while Cole debuted at that show. They’re part of a stable (the Undisputed ERA) and Kyle is tag team champion alongside Bobby Fish. (2/2)

July 17, 2017

  • Kurt Angle’s secret reveal is not expected to be Dixie Carter.
  • No, it was his bastard son Jason Jordan. (1/1)
  • SI is saying Vince McMahon hasn’t been appearing at WWE television tapings as much as he used to and he “doesn’t have the presence he once did.”
  • Interesting. Though anytime I hear wrestlers talk about him on podcasts and such, it sounds like he still has a huge presence. But maybe it was even more back in the day.
  • The speculation is WWE already has something worked out with Cris Cyborg for at least an appearance, and that’s why she’s feuding with Becky Lynch on Twitter.
  • Apparently not because they didn’t do anything with her. It’s possible she and Becky were trying to get some business started. (0/1)
  • According to Sports Illustrated, the deal in place for the Hardys to buy the rights to the Broken gimmick was for between $10-15,000, a non-disparagement clause with Reby Hardy (where she would fined for tweeting negatively about GFW), and a press release announcing the settlement came on good terms. The Hardys balked at the deal when Anthem asked for 50-percent of all revenue, including even on Jeff’s music and art.
  • I love that they made sure to add a “Reby can’t tweet about us” clause.

July 18, 2017

  • There were reportedly mixed reactions to the Mae Young Classic among WWE officials, with some concerned all the competitors weren’t up to the company’s standards for attractiveness.
  • I hope this is one of those rumors that is bull. Also, the MYC ruled.
  • Being moved back an hour for 205 Live didn’t effect Talking Smack’s viewership, according to Observer Radio, as most people watch the show as Video On Demand (not live) anyway.
  • I suppose that could be true. My study of one (myself) watched Talking Smack much less after they moved it back an hour.
  • After her Reina de Reinas championship was vacated by the company and Sexy Star booked to win it this past weekend, Taya Valkyrie quit AAA on Twitter, claiming the promotion stabbed her in the back. The Observer reports putting the title on Sexy was part of a deal to get her to return to AAA.
  • Taya said on Talk is Jericho that she technically didn’t quit because she was still under contract. With that said, she hasn’t been in the promotion since.
  • There’s some talk that WWE and NBC are discussing bringing back Saturday Night’s Main Event as an occasional special in its old 11:30PM time slot.
  • That hasn’t happened. (0/1)

July 19, 2017

  • Battleground isn’t expected to feature any title changes but SummerSlam will likely have a couple.
  • Battleground saw the New Day winning the tag titles from the Usos and Kevin Owens defeating AJ Styles for the US title (though that may have been a botch). There were three changes at SummerSlam. (1/2)
  • The plan is to get The Revival in the Raw tag team title picture sooner rather than later.
  • Unfortunately an injury derailed this. (0/1)
  • Expect a mid-card push for Chad Gable on SmackDown Live now that he’s a singles wrestler. He impressed with his matches against AJ Styles and Kevin Owens.
  • He’s back in a tag team. While he and partner Shelton Benjamin are featured in the tag scene, he isn’t getting a single’s midcard push. (0/1)
  • The Observer notes the idea for the Raw women’s title match at SummerSlam is no longer for a multi-woman match.
  • It was Sasha vs. Alexa one on one. Sasha won the title. (1/1)

July 20, 2017

  • WWE apparently has no plans for Kurt Angle to return to the ring any time soon.
  • He did end up wrestling within a few months at TLC and then at Survivor Series. (0/1)
  • Along with the Brock Lesnar/UFC talk, there’s been increased reports WWE will have him drop the Universal title at SummerSlam
  • He retained and is still champion. (0/1)
  • Bray Wyatt’s wins over Seth Rollins are so he’s ready as an opponent for old rival Roman Reigns in the event WWE puts Raw’s top prize back on The Big Dog next month.
  • Roman didn’t win the title so we won’t know if that was the way it was going to go.
  • Rey Mysterio has been offered a GFW contract, says PWInsider.
  • There’s still word he may end up there. Though not GFW. Impact.

This week: 7/17 - 41%

Overall: 1,942/3,559 - 54.6%

Have a great week, everyone!
