Lucha Underground preview: Career Opportunities

The epic saga of gods versus mortals in an underground fight club known as Lucha Underground continues tonight (Sep. 6) on El Rey Network at 8pm ET/PT. With only three episodes left until the month-long Ultima Lucha Tres, smaller feuds will get settled and larger ones will be cultivated for a clash at the season-ending extravaganza.

Tonight's feature match will be a 5-0 street fight for an Aztec medallion between Cortez Castro and Joey Ryan.

This feud has been brewing since season two when we were introduced to Officer Ryan along with the reveal that Castro is actually undercover cop Reyes. There was tension in the air ever since they first shared a screen.

The build for the 5-0 street fight started a few weeks ago. Ryan informed Dario Cueto that Castro was using Veneno as a masked alias. Cueto put Castro into a mask vs mask match against Sexy Star, but Ryan ripped off Castro's mask shortly after the opening bell rang. That led to the scheduling of tonight's street fight.

As you can see in the photo provided on Twitter, we should be in for a wild, wacky treat. Mace, a night stick, and a riot shield. Even though these two are basically jobbers right now, don't underestimate their ability to put on a show. Both are capable of tearing the house down. Add in police themed weapons and a true hatred between the characters. I'm expecting to be thoroughly sports entertained.

Also on the card tonight will be some sort of skirmish between the Rabbit Tribe and Matanza.

That photo is all I know. It doesn't make much sense to weaken the image of current Aztec medallion recipients in a 1-on-3 contest. I'm predicting Matanza gets a snack in Mascarita Sagrada, which will lead to the Rabbit Tribe saving their savior. But that’s just a guess. Either way, the juxtaposition of drugged out joy versus complete savagery should be an enjoyable sight to see.

Since I don't yet know the third match of the evening, allow me to conjecture. The Gift of the Gods match will need some star power, so I'm thinking the main event will be two heavy hitters hitting each other in an effort to claim an Aztec medallion. Perhaps that plays into the episode’s title, Career Opportunities. It will probably be the main event. Ryan vs Castro should be a doozy, but those characters are a little low on the totem pole to be closing the show.
