WWE No Mercy 2017 results: Roman Reigns beats John Cena

After weeks of talking and hurling insults back-and-forth, John Cena and Roman Reigns finally got together for a fight at tonight’s (Sun., Sept. 24, 2017) WWE No Mercy pay-per-view (PPV) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. They made sure to bill it as a WrestleMania main event worthy match.

You could argue it lived up to the billing.

They opened the match with Reigns getting the better of Cena physically and the latter responding by listening to the crowd, asking if he should leave, and then attempting to do so when the audience inevitably egged him on. Reigns, however, wouldn’t let him walk out, punching him back to the ring.

He was firmly in control, dishing a lot of offense while saying things like “we aren’t on the mic now, you gotta fight” and “I hit hard” after knocking Cena down with yet another punch.

All of Cena’s comebacks were thwarted — Roman had an answer for everything.

Cena, though, is a wily veteran, so he gave himself a chance by ducking a Superman punch into an STF, though Reigns got himself out of that trouble too. Cena continued to find counter openings, even hitting an AA that got a two count.

From then on they traded their best shots.

Like an AA from the middle rope.

Reigns even kicked out of that.

In response to this, Cena cleared off the announce tables and attempted an AA through one of them. Roman managed to push himself off and speared Cena through one of the tables. When they finally got back to the ring, Roman called for another spear but Cena countered into an AA. Instead of going for a pin, he rolled through, picked Reigns up, and hit yet another AA.

Still, Reigns kicked out.

Back on their feet, Reigns returned fire with a Superman punch and a spear. That was enough to put Cena away.

Reigns - 1
Cena - 0

After, Cena endorsed him by raising his hand. Reigns walked out, mouthing “respect” before disappearing behind the curtain. Cena remained in the ring, took a bow, smiled at the crowd, and walked out while fans chanted “Thank you, Cena.” It felt like a goodbye.
