UFC President Dana White may have said the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor megafight on Aug. 26 in Paradise, Nevada, did 6.5 million buys on pay-per-view (PPV) but that’s not the number Showtime is reporting.

The LA Times got the word from Stephen Espinoza, the Executive Vice President at Showtime:

Showtime executive vice president Stephen Espinoza said Friday "it's too early to declare a hard number" but Aug. 25’s Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Conor McGregor fight is "tracking in the mid-to-high 4 million pay-per view buys."

"If we don't reach the record, we're going to be very, very close," he said, "we consider it a massive success."

The previous record was set by the Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight in 2015 that garnered 4.6 million buys in North America. It’s at least possible White is still correct, because he could be accounting for a worldwide total. The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight reportedly did around 5.5 million buys worldwide.

Any which way you slice it, the fight was a massive success.
