Lucha Underground returned tonight (June 28) with more drama and intrigue from the Temple of Boyle Heights as the Cueto Cup rolls on. Here’s what happened and what we learned.
What Happened:
Mil Muertes was meditating when Catrina entered. She told Mil that tonight starts his journey for reclaiming the Lucha Underground championship. He said he’ll destroy everyone for her, “my love.” She kissed him before instructing him to bring her the Cueto Cup.
IJeremiah Crane was watching the entire time.
Mil Muertes squashed Veneno in the first round of the Cueto Cup.
What We Learned:
- That we’ve got a weird love triangle on our hand. They reminded us in the recap clips to start the show that Catrina told Jeremiah that she didn’t love Mil. But she has no problem using his love for her to get what she wants. Jeremiah seems unpredictable himself so I could definitely see him trying to stand up to Mil to prove himself. If the beating Veneno just received is any indication, that’s a bad move. This is a twisted love triangle only the Temple could host.
What We’ve Yet to Learn:
- Are Prince Puma and Mil Muertes still feuding? It feels like they are headed towards Mil/Crane. But I can’t imagine the Man of a Thousand Deaths and Catrina are going to let their loss to Puma in the Boyle Heights Street Fight stand. It will be interesting to see how these feuds come together.
What Happened:
Paul London defeated Vibora by count out in the first round of the Cueto Cup when, from under the ring, the other members of the Rabbit Tribe held Vibora’s feet preventing him from beating the count.
What We Learned:
- Paul London is one whacky dude. He came out wearing a hat with a carrot under it and then proceeded to both try to hold Kobra Moon hostage with said carrot and tried (very unsuccessfully) to use it as a weapon against the much bigger Vibora.
- London should have a more prominent roll in the Temple. After many weeks of Rabbit Tribe/London video teasers prior to their debut, he and the tribe haven’t had a large presence. But he’s very entertaining with the weirdness of his character and he still can go in the ring. Plus the fans love him. With the weird Mala Suerte and Saltador at his side, he’d be entertaining in a more featured story. Hopefully this is the start.
What Happened:
Taya defeated Joey Ryan clean to advance in the Cueto Cup.
What We Learned:
- Taya doesn’t need the help her friend (I’m unsure if their relationship is LU canon) Johnny Mundo does. Johnny wins often with the help of the World Wide Underground and Taya. Taya wins on her own.
What We’ve Yet to Learn:
- Is Joey Ryan still working with Dario Cueto? He was a sleazy cop who ended up betraying his undercover partner Cortez Castro because Ryan felt that Dario’s side was the side of the war to be on. But outside outing Castro, he hasn’t seemed to be too instrumental to Cueto’s plans.
What Happened:
Cut to the bathroom to find Mil Muertes in a nice suit. As he’s leaving, he was ambushed by Jeremiah Crane. Crane put down a beating on Mil, told him “She’s mine”, set a chair up on Mil’s throat and hit it with another chair.
What We Learned:
- That love is a dangerous thing. I speculated earlier that Jeremiah’s love for Catrina could lead to him standing up to Mil and that could be bad for Crane. But that wasn’t entirely accurate. Instead, he ambushed the (dead) man and left him laying in the bathroom. This most definitely is going to be the most violent soap opera plot.
- Mil Muertes cleans up well.
What Happened:
Jeremiah Crane defeated Killshot to advance in the first round when Dante Fox distracted Killshot on the microphone to cost him the match.
After the match, the lights went out and when they came on, Catrina appeared on the top of the stairs, staring down at Crane. He blew her a kiss.
What We Learned:
- This was match of the Cup so far. While it’s only three-fourths through the first round, this match shined. It was a non-stop war of attrition between two men trying to survive the other’s best shot. Jeremiah Crane is a nasty fight, who will spit on his hand before slapping you with it to add insult to injury. Killshot is so fun to watch in the ring with his fluid movements and sharp kicks.
- Randy Orton probably hated this match. Especially since the beginning of it was both men trying to out dive each other.
- Killshot and Dante Fox may never be finished with each other. I guess that’s what happens when someone leaves someone else to die. Or at least when someone perceives it that way.
What We’ve Yet to Learn:
- What is Catrina’s plan? She clearly knew that it was Crane who left Mil Muertes for dead in the Temple’s scuzzy bathroom. Does that impress her? Or this going to end with Catrina making Crane pay? (Though I can also seem him digging whatever torture she could have planned for him.)
What Happened:
Dario was in his office talking up the Cueto Cup to an unknown individual. We learn that individual is called “Son of Madness,” a big dude with a big beard wearing a Son of Havoc get-up. He’ll be facing Son of Havoc next week.
What We’ve Yet to Learn:
- Who the hell is this guy? Obviously he’s someone from Son of Havoc’s past, but outside that, I’m clueless. It’s been awhile since Son of Havoc has had a real story so getting to learn more about his backstory is exciting.
The main event was really fun and another love story made tonight’s episode rather entertaining. Catrina is one of the most interesting characters in the Temple so I’m all about exploring her past a bit more.
Next week: Son of Madness! See you then!
