Lucha Underground started their Cueto Cup tonight as events rolled on in the Temple of Boyle Heights. Here’s what happen and what we’ve learned.
What happened:
Dario Cueto was in his office when Pentagon Dark walked in without knocking. Pentagon said he’s all healed up and wants to know where Black Lotus is. Dario told him she’s gone back to Hong Kong. Pentagon then threatened to break Dario’s arm and grabbed his hand. El Jefe said he’ll put him in the Cueto Cup so he has a chance to win the Lucha Underground title at Ultima Lucha Tres. This was enough for Pentagon Dark for now, but he said that if he doesn’t win the gold, he will break Dario’s arm.
What We Learned:
- Pentagon really has no fear. Despite Dario holding all the promotional power and having a hoss of a brother (given they aren’t actually on the best terms currently), Dark has no problem threatening to break the boss’ arm. Ballsy.
- Dario should be scared. Pentagon isn’t lying and he may be looking at some compound fractures if Pentagon doesn’t leave Ultima Lucha with gold.
What happened:
The Mack defeated Mala Suerte in a first round match up.
What We Learned:
- This was no squash. I came into this match figuring Mack would handle this easily. Willie’s a big name in LU and this was Mala Suerte’s first single’s match. None-the-less, Mala Suerte more than held his own. There were a couple spots that I thought maybe he could have won it.
- If you’re going to chop the Mack, make sure you give it your all. In the middle of the match, Mala Suerte delivered a chop to the Mack in the corner and turned around to celebrate. Mack responded with a look that said “You’ve got to do better than that.”
- The Believers have a sense of humor. In a great spot, Mala Suerte climbed to the top turnbuckle while Mack was down next to the turnbuckle opposite, teasing a crazy high risk move from far away. Instead, he climbed down, ran across, and devliered a senton instead. The crowd played along with a “Holy shit” chant to praise that high risk spectacle.
What happened:
Cage was working out while wearing his God gauntlet. Dario Cueto walked up, telling Cage that Lawrence Delgado asked that Cage come by his office tonight. Cage said he was not interested. Cueto insisted that Delgado is someone Cage will want to be acquainted with.
What We Learned:
- Cage has a little more darkness to him. While he never cared much for Dario, it looked like he could snap at any moment during this scene. The God gauntlet seems to be changing him.
What happened:
Pentagon Dark defeated Argenis in a first round match.
After the match, he broke Argenis’ arm.
What We Learned:
- There are going to be more broken limbs coming. After the match ended, Pentagon went vintage and broke his opponent’s arm. The way he looked tonight, he’s going to likely go far in this tournament. He could be a favorite. That means more people have to worry about their limbs if they’re matched up with him.
- The Believers are cruel. Pentagon was going to leave after the match. It was only when the crowd chanted “Break him arm!” that Pentagon returned and shattered Argenis’ bone. Some blood thirsty folk in those Temple stands.
What Happened:
Texano defeated Famous B in the first round of the Cueto Cup.
Famous B said prior the match that he wanted to represent Texano instead of fight him. And to show how serious he was, he laid down for Texano. Texano picked him up and hit a big powerbomb first and then went to the pin.
What We Learned:
- Famous B will do whatever it takes. The manager extraordinaire is looking for a new client. Instead of fighting for a chance at the promotion’s top prize, he’s willing to lie down and get pinned. I wouldn’t be surprised if taking a big sit-down powerbomb doesn’t deter B. Especially since it seemed like Texano had eyes for Brenda
What Happened:
Drago (with Kobra Moon in his corner) defeated Aerostar in the first round of the Cueto Cup.
After the match, Kobra Moon, ordered Drago to deliver more punishment to Aerostar.
What We Learned:
- Aerostar still has hope for his friend. He tried to talk some sense into Drago as the match started but Drago wouldn’t have it. It seemed like the man from space was reluctant to fight his friend like this, but eventually knew he had to. These two have been friends for a while and it’s understandable that Aerostar doesn’t want to give up on Drago.
- High risk can be dangerous. Aerostar performed a tope suicida on Drago mid-match, but seemed to take the damage himself. The momentum of his dive ended up driving him head first into the audience chairs. It was nasty looking.
- You can’t use Drago’s move against him. At the end of the match, Aerostar tried to use Drago’s move against him twice. The first time it just didn’t work. The second time it was reversed and Drago earned the pin. I’m not sure why Aerostar did that. Perhaps to try to remind his old friend of who he truly is?
What We’ve Yet to Learn:
- Drago’s motives. Is he completely brainwashed by Kobra Moon after being held prisoner by the tribe? Or is he somewhat thinking on his own here? Was this something that was always in him and he finally allowed it to come out?
What Happened:
Cage took Dario’s advice and made his way to Councilman Delgado’s office. Delgado said that it looks like the gauntlet is working. This confused Cage. The big man made it known that he does not work for Delgado. But the councilman said he will. As the gauntlet surged with electricity, Cage picked up Delgao by the neck and shoved him in the wall. Cage stopped himself and apologized. Delgado said that it was OK, that Cage was still thinking like a man.
Then Cage delivered a punch that appeared to go into the skull of Delgado, killing him!
What We Learned:
- So that thing from earlier about Cage seeming a bit dark? Yeah, turns out that was the understatement of the year. Because Cage FRICKIN’ KILLED A GUY! WITH HIS FIST! Serious “Holy S*#!” moment right there. Watch the eyeballs on the way out.
What We’ve Yet to Learn:
- Did Delgado have an idea this was going to happen? Was this part of the plan, sacrificing himself to continue turning Cage into a god? Or was this an unknown side effect of their experiment?
Wow. That last scene was bonkers. Cage murdering a man with one punch of the gauntlet was something I did not see coming. That story is surely heating up.
The rest of the show was fun. There were some entertaining first round match ups and having Aerostar and Drago face just a week after Drago’s betrayal played well. This all bodes will for a really fun tournament in the coming weeks.
Sound off below and we’ll see you next week!
