Before War of the Worlds: New York City kicked off, Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling were ready with a big announcement for July’s G1 Special shows in Long Beach, California.

Yep! In a tournament over those two nights (July 1-2), an IWGP United States Champion will be crowned. It’s the first time New Japan has introduced a new singles championship since the NEVER Openweight Championship was created in the fall of 2012.
However, it’s not the first time NJPW has promoted a title branded for the western hemisphere, with the NWF North American, NWA North American Tag Team, and WWF North American Heavyweight Championships all having a home in New Japan in the 70s and 80s.
