Picking the field for the first ever Women's Royal Rumble

WWE.com

So we're finally here.

It's been a few years since the 4 Horsewomen were tearing their way up from NXT. Then the introduction of the Women's Championship at WrestleMania and The Mae Young Classic. Ring of Honor (ROH )just announced their women's title, and all of that following on from years of women's wrestling being established on the indie scene.

You'd be hard pressed to point to any other time in history as more of a golden age for women's wrestling.

And as all this has been going on, in the back of my mind was this. Someday there's gonna be a Women's Royal Rumble. Screw WrestleMania. This is the biggest thing in wrestling and we all know it. And WWE has done this right. Warts and all they've built a division with real range and depth. Its not just a match you want to see, its a roster you want to see in the match.

So who's in?

I'm going with the premise that this is a full, 30 woman over the top battle royal. I have the feeling they might not go that far, instead having qualifying matches for a 20 woman Rumble including NXT wrestlers. According to their roster, I'm counting 10 women from Raw and 9 from SmackDown. Maria Kanellis and Nikki Bella are both listed, but I'm not expecting either to make an appearance, and I'm obviously (and unfortunately) excluding Alexa and Charlotte as the champions.

Here's the eligible Raw Women's Roster:

Alicia Fox
Asuka
Bayley
Dana Brooke
Mandy Rose
Mickie James
Nia Jax
Paige
Sasha Banks
Sonya Deville

and SmackDown:

Becky Lynch
Carmella
Liv Morgan
Lana
Naomi
Natalya
Ruby Riott
Sarah Logan
Tamina

If this were to be a 20 Woman Rumble, we could go with that list right there plus one Trish Stratus surprise and call it a pretty good night. But I'm going to guess that WWE will want to give its developmental brand some time in the match and, yes, a few surprise returns.

So we've got 11 more spots to get to 30. Who are we likely to see? First things first...

NXT

We're not going to see the whole roster here, although its possible. All told, there's just about 30 women between all three rosters, so WWE could just give all of its full time female wrestlers a showcase, which would be great.

That would give us a ton of match-ups we've never seen, especially if we include the entire NXT women's locker room. But I feel like we're better off here giving a more focused look at the NXT women's division by highlighting its brightest stars.

Let's say the yellow brand gets 7 spots for , which would make up a good portion of the field here.

Four spots go right to the recent Fatal Fourway participants - Kairi Sane, Peyton Royce, Nikki Cross, and our champion Ember Moon. Since Peyton's here, I'd hate to breakup true friendship, so Billie Kay is in as well. For the last two spots, I'm going with Bianca Belair and Lacey Evans - two homegrown NXT talents. Lacey's a bit of a wild card, but she seems to be someone WWE is interested in focusing on. And Bianca's a star whose character will come across even for people who've never heard of her.

That leaves us with the fun stuff.

Four spots for surprise entrants

Now, I'm not going to go too far in guess work here, cause it's pointless. They could pick anybody. They could just pick four more women from NXT.

But I do have a few guesses with some logic behind them.

First of all, Nikki Bella. I said earlier I wouldn't expect her to show as a member of the main roster, but in a late, protected spot, their longest reigning women's champion (Moolah who?) would be a good choice. Then there's Trish. This entire women's revolution has happened and she's barely been mentioned? Seems like an oversight. This is the night to correct it.

For the last two spots, I'm giving one to Shayna Baszler. I'm a purist, so I've kept out of the NXT taping spoilers, but I'm well aware she's already there, so why wouldn't you use her here. Give us a little rematch with Kairi.

So, with that, here's the Women's Royal Rumble as I see it:

Alicia Fox
Asuka
Bayley
Dana Brooke
Mandy Rose
Mickie James
Nia Jax
Paige
Sasha Banks
Sonya Deville
Becky Lynch
Carmella
Liv Morgan
Lana
Naomi
Natalya
Ruby Riott
Sarah Logan
Tamina
Ember Moon
Kairi Sane
Peyton Royce
Billie Kay
Nikki Cross
Lacey Evans
Bianca Belair
Nikki Bella
Trish Stratus
Shayna Baszler

For those keeping score at home, that's only 29 competitors. Who's # 30?

Who knows? It's the Royal Rumble!
