It’s not even out yet, and it’s surely about to get crushed by the force of Star Wars: The Last Jedi this weekend at the box office, but Ferdinand is off to a good start. The animated adapation of the popular book, The Story of Ferdinand, about “a giant bull with a big heart” earned a 2018 Globe Globe nomination for Best Animated Film, meaning we could see John Cena at the awards ceremony (if we could see him, that is).
Cena is the lead voice in Ferdinand, and it’s likely success - the folks at 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios know it’s not beating Luke Skywalker and company, and have wisely programmed it to release opposite the latest Episode VIII to pick up viewers with kids too young for lightsaber duels and exploding planets - will be another big step in the 16 time world champ becoming a major Hollywood star.
Ferdinand probably won’t take home the award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since it’s pitted against Disney/Pixar’s Coco, but you never know!
Big Movie John wasn’t the only wrestling-adjace nominee for a Globe, either. GLOW’s Alison Brie picked up another Best Actress nod (for Performance in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy).
Maybe she’ll show up on an episode of Total Divas/Bellas shot at the ceremony?
