This Day in Wrestling History (Jan. 6): Jake “The Snake” Returns

this day in wrestling history

34 years ago today in San Juan, Puerto Rico, WWC Universal Champion Carlos Colon defeated NWA World Champion Ric Flair in a non-title champion versus champion match.

22 years ago today in Birmingham, Alabama, Randy Savage makes his in-ring debut for WCW with a win over Avalanche.

14 years ago today on RAW from Phoenix, Arizona (WWE Network link), Lance Storm and William Regal defeated Booker T and Goldust to win the World Tag Team Championship.

11 years ago today, WWE releases Eduardo Anibal Gonzalez Hernandez, best known to wrestling fans as Juventud Guerrera.

The move comes three days after a Smackdown taping when Guerrera allegedly was uncooperative in a match against then-WWE Cruiserweight Champion Kid Kash, including sandbagging, giving stiff shots, and doing more aerial maneuvers than necessary (cruiserweights at the time were told to tone down their movesets to prevent injury), including using the 450 splash, which was banned just a month after Juventud’s debut when he fractured several bones in Paul London's face.

Perhaps not helping the former WCW and WWE Cruiserweight Champion’s case for sticking around was his erratic behavior during his seven months on the roster: he once told a group of wrestling fans on a plane that he was Mexico’s equivalent of The Rock; he told others he was on the level of stars such as Steve Austin, The Undertaker, John Cena, and Batista; he even referred to himself in the third person. In fact, he proved to be such a liability that his Mexicools partners Super Crazy and Psicosis (who did not get along with Guerrera and had not for years prior to joining WWE) asked management to break away from Guerrera to save their jobs.

Guerrera has had two runs in AAA since his WWE release and worked on the independent circuit.

9 years ago today, TNA presented Final Resolution from the Impact Zone at Universal Orlando.

It's actually the first of two Final Resolution events presented that year, as a rescheduling of PPV events later in the year resulted in a second event of the same name in December.

  • LAX (Homicide & Hernandez) defeated Lance Hoyt & Jimmy Rave.
  • Kaz defeated Black Reign.
  • Gail Kim defeated Awesome Kong in a no disqualification match to win the TNA Knockouts Championship.
  • Judas Mesias defeated Abyss.
  • Booker T and Sharmell defeated Robert Roode & Traci Brooks.
  • Team 3D & Johnny Devine defeated Motor City Machine Guns & Jay Lethal in an Ultimate X Match.
  • A.J. Styles & Tomko defeated Kevin Nash & Samoa Joe to retain the TNA World Tag Team Championship.
  • Kurt Angle defeated Christian Cage to retain the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.

3 years ago today, WWE aired an "old school"-themed edition of RAW from Baltimore, Maryland (WWE Network link).

The show was highlighted by the return of Jake "The Snake" Roberts. Though he'd express his desire the previous April to participate in the 2014 Royal Rumble, he would not be a part of the event.

Two weeks later, it was announced that he would be a part of the 2014 WWE Hall of Fame class. He was inducted three months later by Diamond Dallas Page, a man he credits for saving his life.

There is speculation that Page himself will join Roberts in the WWE Hall of Fame later this year.

2 years ago today, TNA announces via Twitter they have re-signed the American Wolves (Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards).

2 years ago today, CM Punk begins formal mixed martial arts training out of the Roufusport Camp in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Punk signed a multi-fight deal with UFC about a week after his tell-all interview on Art of Wrestling with Colt Cabana on his final days in WWE.

Punk, real name Phillip Brooks, made his UFC debut at UFC 202 in September 2016 with first round defeat to Mickey Gall.
