Fresh off a successful appearance at one of the biggest shows on the U.S. independent wrestling calendar at this weekend’s Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG) Battle of Los Angeles (BOLA) tournament, it sounds like Cody Rhodes has even bigger - or at least nationally televised - things on his plate in the coming months.
According to Dave Meltzer, who reported on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio (subscription required but recommended) that he spoke to Rhodes at BOLA, the “grandson of a plumber” will be appearing for TNA soon. The plan seems to be to feud with Mike Bennett. Rhodes and Bennett worked a Northeast Wrestling show in late August, so it’s a familiar pairing for both men. It also presents an opportunity for Brandi Rhodes to join her husband, as she did at BOLA, since Bennett’s wife Maria Kanellis is a regular on Impact Wrestling.
Heading to the Impact Zone any time soon would appear to present a conflict with Cody’s already announced appearance for Ring of Honor (ROH) at December’s Final Battle pay-per-view (PPV). According to Meltzer, however, Rhodes says his deals with both companies are non-exclusive. TNA and ROH have been competitive over talent in recent years, with names like Kenny King, Christopher Daniels, Moose and Bennett moving from one promotion to the other. If true, Dusty’s son is proving to have quite a bit of leverage in negotiating his post-WWE appearances.
It also doesn’t sound like a done deal that he’ll even have the Rhodes name while working with either company, but he’s been able to keep a working relationship with WWE on some fronts, and could still conceivably work something out there, as well.
What do you think of the report? Excited, or going straight to “what is _____ doing in the Impact Zone?” jokes?
