SmackDown Tag Team Championship Tournament Match
The Usos vs Hype Bros
The Hype Bros and Usos have already lost matches in this tournament, but a devastating injury to American Alpha has provided them with a second chance for championship gold.
The Road to Backlash 2016
The recent WWE brand split left SmackDown Live without the tag team championships. To remedy that situation, an 8-team tournament was created in order to crown new tag team champions for the SmackDown Live brand. This idea was so exciting that even the Headbangers showed up to partake in the fun.
The Hype Bros impressively defeated the Vaudevillains in the first round of the tournament, but they apparently weren’t hyped enough to survive a gore from Rhyno in the second round, abruptly ending their quest for gold.
The Usos defeated the Ascension in the first round, setting up a potentially thrilling match with the hot new tandem of American Alpha in the second round. The Usos utilized an aggressive approach in this match, but it ended up backfiring on them in a major way.
The Usos shockingly lost the match in about 30 seconds, but they didn’t just walk to the back after getting pinned. The Usos suddenly snapped, beating the hell out of both members of American Alpha, and viciously destroying Chad Gable’s leg with a brutal top rope splash.
Jimmy and Jey explained that they bottled up this frustration for the last 6 years, but seeing how quickly the fans turned on them for American Alpha finally gave them an appropriate time to release that frustration. The Usos are done fighting for the respect of the WWE audience. From now on they are just going to do whatever they have to do to win, period.
As a result of the attack, Gable has to sit on the shelf for about 2 to 4 weeks, and so American Alpha was removed from the tournament. With Heath Slater and Rhyno already waiting for an opponent in the finals of the tournament and Backlash less than a week away, Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon needed to make a quick decision on how to handle this situation. They decided to give both teams that lost in the second round (Hype Bros and Usos) a second chance in the tournament.
It seems highly questionable to me that the Usos were actually rewarded for throwing the tournament into disarray. The Usos probably realized that when an entire tag team division is only 6 teams deep, and one of those teams is injured, Bryan and Shane wouldn’t have too many alternatives to choose from to resolve the situation. This solution still seems unacceptable to me; the Usos are clearly the least deserving team of a second chance due to their unjustifiable actions. But Bryan and Shane obviously disagree with that assessment.
What’s at stake?
The Hype Bros and Usos are each getting a second chance in the SmackDown Tag Team Championship tournament, with the winner of this match advancing to the finals to meet the unstoppable duo of Heath Slater and Rhyno.
Considering that the Hype Bros already lost a match to Slater and Rhyno in this tournament, a win for the Usos would set up a fresher match in the finals.
But even if the Usos lose this match, they can probably earn a third chance by just injuring Mojo Rawley after the match is over.
