We were scheduled to have a match between Bobby Roode and Andrade “Cien” Almas at TakeOver: Brooklyn II tonight in Barclays Center.
Instead, we got the GLORIOUS show.
Borrowing Bad News Barrett’s lift (with a bit of a facelift), Roode and NXT Creative milked the viral sensation of the debuting Superstar’s new theme song “Glorious Domination”. The New York crowd sang along and chanted “This is Glorious”, despite a backstage promo by the heel putting down the borough hosting the show.
For the second straight live special, Almas found himself opposite a villain the fans love. The luchador did manage to get some laughs from the audience when he flashed some cockiness when dodging Bobby’s offense, but his comebacks after taking a beating were just as often met with apathy as anything else.
After a hard-hitting sequence where the two men traded stiff shots in the middle of the ring following Andrade’s running double knees, Roode hit back with a spinebuster, which was a set-up for the... of course, GLORIOUS BOMB finisher.
Roode’s crusade to change NXT is off to a good start. Almas’ launch may need a new start.
