WWE Battleground 2016 results: Sami Zayn defeats Kevin Owens

It came to this.

Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens have battled across promotions, and across brands in WWE. But when they basically cost each other the Intercontinental title and shots at the WWE championship over the last few months, they both decided it was time to end it.

Battleground was the next pay-per-view (PPV) on the card, so that's where they decided to get some closure. Will it work?

Their animosity was evident at the outset, as Owens marched to Sami's corner before the bell, and Zayn tried to take his friend-turned-enemy's head off with his finisher as soon as the bell sounded. KO switched from aggression to strategy quickly, however, and sliding out of the ring not only allowed him to dodge the Helluva Kick, but also to take control of the action.

Kevin Owens had control of Sami for awhile, a result of slamming his former best friend's hand against the ring post multiple times. Typical for the Underdog from the Underground, even the crossface from Owens onto Zayn's bad arm couldn't get him to quit. Zayn got back into it with a brutal brain buster onto the ring apron.

The men traded big move after big move to the delight of the DC crowd. Zayn finally set up for the Helluva Kick but  but Owens caught him with a Pop Up Powerbomb. To the dismay of KO, Zayn got his foot under the rope and stayed alive. Soon he hit that Helluva kick he was looking for. But that wasn't enough. He decided to deliver a second before pinning his former best friend to get the win.
